Hi, just wondering if anyone remembers Alex Smith from the old days. He's my next door neighbour and always telling me about how it used to be. Years ago he won just about everything except The Waterloo Cup. Hes a Scotish man in his 70's. He still keeps his finger in the coursing world. Hes a bit of a bookmaker now. Any stories would be good so I can wind him up. lol

I saw Alex quite recently (last year) at the Yorkshire fund raiser. I first came across him at a similar event at Fakenham racecourse (been doing that sort of thing since 1976 ;) ). I took a young bitch who had won the first coursing stake I entered her in with the Cotswold and had also won 3 races at Swindon in the previous three months. I thought the opposition must be red hot because she was the longest odds but I only had a fiver on me and no time to go back to the car for more so I punted that and prepared to be beaten since I didn't know any of the other dogs. She duly won the stake and I kicked myself for not having more money about me - I don't like my dogs to run unbacked but I am not a natural punter. Alex left the long odds on his board for all three rounds, including the final which I thought was a bit of an insult but he told me later that I was the only person who backed her :)
