ALFIE

Alfie is a 4 year old ex-racing greyhound who has now been retired after a successful career. He is a very tall, long boy but carries himself well and looks very elegant. His coat is in a poor state at the moment, but once he loses all his dull kennel coat he’s going to be such an eye catcher.

Alfie is a lovely, sweet boy who is more than happy with the simple things in life. All he needs is a soft bed, some good food and lots of cuddles and he’s a very happy hound. Alfie adores being around people and will follow you anywhere. Like a lot of retired racers, Alfie has a calm, ‘been there, done that’ demeanour and takes everything in his stride. He walks well on the lead and travels nicely in the car.

Alfie has behaved very well with our other greyhounds and enjoys being in their company. He has not been tested with small dogs though this can be carried out prior to adoption if requested. Often ex-racing greyhounds take a bit of socialisation work to realise smaller breeds are in fact dogs as they would never have seen them before. Alfie is not cat friendly.

Dear Alfie has not yet been in a home environment, so new owners will need to be a bit patient at the start and allow him time to settle and learn the house rules. It usually takes 10-14 days for new greyhounds to start to settle down in a home, and really all they need is a bit of time and patience.

Like most greyhounds, Alfie will not need a huge amount of exercise. He will be content with two 20min walks a day and perhaps a chance to stretch his legs offlead in a safe area once or twice a week.

In general greyhounds are calm, mannerly dogs that are well used to being handled. They can fit very well in to a wide range of different lifestyles and usually adjust to the home life very quickly. Their soft, easy going nature often makes them ideal to live in a family with children, while their love of lazing around and low exercise requirements can make them perfect for the elderly. Greyhounds also don’t shed as much as other more popular dog breeds and this can make them suitable to live with allergy sufferers.

This sweetie-pie is currently being kennelled in Ireland, and can be transported via Kerry Greyhounds to the UK or Europe if a suitable home offer comes up. This will be organised and paid for by Kerry Greyhounds, and we ask only for a donation to help cover costs. He is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure.

If you are interested in fostering or adopting Alfie, please email me on tamakin_84@yahoo.co.uk for our adoption application and information pack. Thanks!

Kerry Greyhound Connection is a small voluntary organisation based in County Kerry, Ireland and Norfolk, England and operates through a network of volunteers. We can look after approximately 70 greyhounds at any one time, in Ireland and the UK.

Each dog is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped, and given a full veterinary check before being adopted.

We assess the suitability of all home offers, and we have homed greyhounds in Ireland, the UK, Europe and the USA.
