Good news about Holly - and it wouldn't be the same without you both Kev and Linda.

It has to make you question yourself, and wonder what if you'd done things differently?.....but at the end of the day these little creatures are doing something they enjoy so much, and are happier dogs for it. Scott, I'm sure the soft ground had nothing to do with it, and wouldn't you probably have questioned the hard ground had it been that way?

Good luck, and a speedy recovery to both Diesel and Holly - at least things look brighter for both of them than it did yesterday - and hopefully tomorrow will be better still.

See you at the Champs Kev and Linda - you'd better be there!

Great news~ so pleased Holly, in time will be back on her feet again, wishing her a very speedy recovery :huggles: :luck: :huggles:

With regard to the racing, I think every-one who owns and races whippets will have questioned themselves after this week-end's injuries. I thought about it myself yesterday and came to the conclusion that I would continue because the dogs enjoy it and are designed for it. It is a well moderated sport with attention given to the welfare and safety of the dogs. I think dogs are in more danger running free in woods or on bumpy ground. Think of Rae's run of bad fortune, Star and Leia have both had penetrating injuries from sticks, and Leia has smashed her ankle up on a walk..........Also, whippets have managed to break their necks by running head-long into benches in parks in the past. It does put things into perspective.............

I am so glad Saxon Gold is on the mend, I hope she makes a full recovery :))

This is very good news :) I hope Holly's owners don't give up the sport - I'm quite sure that Holly won't want too!

And Scott ... injuries are FAR more likely in the summer (no joke intended, we WILL have one this year!) when tracks are firm than at this time of year. What others have already said - racing is as safe as we can make it but accidents DO occur because, well - they are accidents!

I too gave pause for thought on Sunday night and I don't want to tempt fate, but I haven't had a dog with a serious injury in 16 years of racing so I now worry that my turn is overdue. But listen - your dogs WILL race one way or another and if it's not in controlled conditions on a track it will be in the woods or fields chasing game or each other and I know which place is the bigger risk - and it ain't the track!

The ground at Maidstone was perfect by the way.

i agree with ian the ground was perfect.

as to kev i spoke to him the day after and he is not going to give up racing :D

holly has to rest for a few weeks but fingers crossed she will be back.

Can I ask if anybody knows what the ground conditions were like?
Two young dogs (same age), same sire, same day! Spooky!

Been replaying the day in my head all day and as RM at the Northern I feel guilty that I ran on soft ground and that was a contributing factor. Going forward it won't happen in future as I'd hate anybody to experience our last 24 hours.

We checked the ground after it had happened scott and although it was wet and muddy, which is understandable given the rain previously and on the day, there were no holes or anything unusual there, it may have just been a very unfortunate slip :(

so glad Holly will be fine :)

Scott,,,Ive had a few bad accident's over the last few year's,,one broke his leg so bad it had to be amputated,,but he still run after anything that moved,,the other did not come back home. I have raced non ped's for 20yrs and I was going to stop racing as I was scared stiff, and still am in a way but my 2 love to race and I think would hate me for stopping them doing it.

I think most accident's happen at home anyway and whippet's being whippet's, do everything at 100mph.

Chin up and I hope everyone who's dog's, got hurt last weekend get better very quickly and do what whippet's love most,,run and have fun.

All the best

I agree with Ian that whilst accidents do happen racing is pretty safe really. Safer than free running anyway. At least on the track you know where your dog is going to start and finish and all objects have been removed from its path and the ground is pretty level. The dogs are warmed up before a race which they aren't when they are free running and all other dogs running at the same time are at least running in the same direction at a similar speed.

:luck:

Has anyone heard how Holly is? hope she is making good progress :huggles: :huggles: :luck:
