Hi everyone,

My name is Michael and I live in Caithness (very close to John O’Groats). I have a very new (to me) 14 month old American Cocker called Harry. He’s been with me for 2 months now and is extremely challenging (he is afraid of everything). I started dipping in and out of dogforum.co.uk as I realised there is such good info and advice available and it gives a feeling of not being alone. I decided to sign up today.

Hello and welcome. I used to stay in a friend's croft in Caithness, many years ago. Beautiful, bleak and very windy place.

Welcome to the forum - touring the Highlands is at the top of my bucket list :) I do hope Harry soon settles down and feels safe.

Yes, Caithness is all of those things and more. Extremely friendly people, fantastic views both inland and out to sea, quiet (most of the time) and a wonderful part of the Highlands to visit. Oh, and no midges here!

Thank you. I’m hoping he settles down soon too. The poor chap has been kennelled for the first 12 months of his life and although he loves being indoors he is terrified of anything that goes bang, squeak or involves going beyond the boundaries of the garden.

Hi and welcome to you and Harry.:)
Poor thing only ever knowing kennels until you! Slowly, slowly hopefully his confidence will grow and he'll settle down with less fears, 2 months out of kennels is no time really in the grand scheme of things. If he's quite happy indoors with you than that is a good start...

Thank you. Yes, slowly slowly is the only way. Never had an unsocialised dog before so everyday is a school day with Harry but he’s worth it.
