Are a vets pet records confidential?

We recently bought our new addition to the family a French Bulldog puppy (Winston) and we were given his record card of his vaccinations but the lady also told us he had a heart murmur graded at a 2 at 8 weeks and a 1 at 10weeks. The heart murmur is recorded on the card but not graded. Out of interest before I take him for his puppy check at my vets I have just rang the previous vets and the receptionist was quite abrupt saying his records were confidential and I would have to ask permission from the lady we bought him from. I asked if my vet could ring and speak to their vet and she said no, no information would be given? Seems a bit silly when you are trying to look out for the best interests of your pet. is this strictly true? We have fostered dogs previously and have never had to obtain the previous owners permission to obtain information about vaccinations etc.

I would imagine that information would be a business contract between the breeder and vet and as such, would be private. Contacting the breeder/previous owner would be the correct way to approach this, I would think.

Yes, the records will be protected by the Data Protection Act and the receptionist was right to refuse although, not quite so rudely!! lol

Just had a phoncecall from previous owners vet he was very nice and said he had contacted owner so could speak to me. 1st check at 8 weeks was graded a 1, 2nd check at 10 weeks it was reduced so not as loud or consistent so not graded. Vet (very nice) suggested he would probably grow out of it. Just rang my vet back with info and booked Winston in for a puppy check and microchipping

Your little Frenchie looks lovely, I have a friend who breeds French Bulldogs and she has one little girl who looks very much like yours. I know vets can pass information between themselves if a pet moves vets.

When I sold my puppies, I had my vet receptionists make a note of the new owners' names and gave them permission to release their notes to either the new owners or the vets representing the new owners. Not that there was much to tell, just info on their health checks, jabs and such.

I suspect in your case it was probably just an oversight on behalf of the breeder, and I'm glad to hear that the vet was able to speak to you after confirming with the original owners.
