Aslan Lasaraleen (show bred whippet) was first in a full field of 8 whippets in a 311 metre race on the weekend. She was racing against dogs and bitches, 4 of whom were seasoned racers and winners. She did the 311m in ~22:40 secs. (Can anyone from the English racing fraternity tell me if that's a good time?) The course record by a greyhound is 17:11.

Her friend, Ch Arjai Behind the Mask (also show bred - by Jo Kramer) won two races over 311m and his best time was 21:04

These dogs are owned by my friend Natalie Ghiggioli who lives in Cassilis, near Mudgee, NSW and they have formed a racing group of whippets and other sighthounds.

There was a film crew there making a documentary so I hope I get to see it!

Congratulations, You obviously breed good all rounders in Australia!! I can't help with the times, all I know is that it would take me a heck of a lot longer to run that distance!! :- " :lol:

around 14.91 seconds over 240 yards. 26lb dog.

What size/weight are the 2 dogs,
Sorry Mark I have no idea of their weights but "Houston" (21:04sec) is a big whippet (tall) and "Lana" (22:40sec) is too ~19 1/2 inches. He is in race fitness but I doubt that Lana would be - she hasn't been racing before as far as I know.

And these race meetings aren't very regular either - one every couple of months rather than weekly.

How many yards is 311m? I have no idea of conversion.

Well done Lana! You must be very pleased. I'm thrilled to know there is another racing club. This is a GOOD thing. I wondered about it when you mentioned your whippets racing in NSW as I thought there was no longer a club there. Do they have a web site? Maybe they could link up with the Vic Whippet Racing Club.

As far as the times they're not bad for Peds. Yours would probably be about a grade 4 time in our club. We used to have a ped dog bred by Jill Marks running in Grade 2 against the race bred dogs. He was the fastest Ped I've seen.

The Arjai dog seems to have run a very fast time by our standards. What is the track & is it electronic timing? That would make a difference.

Our dogs race twice, a sprint of 100m then a short rest & then a distance of 362 on a round sand track.

240yd = 219.46mts

311 mts = 340 yds I think

Congratulations. Lana, it is good to see some whippets are not just "pretty faces".

Further info.....

Houston = 14kg

Lana = ~12kg

Track is the Mudgee Greyhound Track: grass.

Electronic timing? yes. and photo finish. Lana won by a short half head.

They are not an affiliated club. They are a social group but all have joined the Hunter Valley Whippet Racing Club in order to be able to run their social meets under the club's rules etc.

They meet once every two months.

They also had a puppy race on this day - all the pups were Houston x Lana babies at 4mths old. They wouldn't chase the bunny so a girl ran up the track and they all chased her. How hilarious! What fun it would have been. :D :lol: :p

John if I remember rightly only 3 dogs broke 15.00 at the champs over 240yds, Shiny going under 15.00 3 times that day (14.97, 14.97, 14.91? I may be wronge as I havn't got the programme with me) most dogs were doing 15.20's- 15.60's

Right Aslan here we go! (hope you can follow my reasoning)

it's a bit awkward to compare the times accuratly as we dont have any races in the UK for Ped whippets over 340yds, but the best we can do it calculate what times dogs might do over that distance assuming they would compleat the 340yds at the same constant speed of the 240yds.

WCRCh Shiny at the WCRA (Whippet Cluib Racing Championships) Champs last weekend did a blisterying 14.91 for 240yds this equates (roughly) to .062 per yd, so over the 340yds may do 21.12 (in theory) but shiney does run on very strong so may actualy do quicker over the 340yds.

so useing that as a guild your dog over the 340yds runs each yd in .066 which would mean (again only a rough guid) running over the 240yds may do 15.81 which would be respectable but would leave her struggling against the top racers.

hope this give you some idea?. :wacko:

God I love a man who knows his sums :wub:

Well done anyway, sounds very good to me Lana, from someone who is numerically subnormal :b

"respectable" does it for me Mark! That's enough to make me smile. :D

Thanks so much for that.

Just thought you might like to know the track record at our racing club. It's a race bred whippet though, not a ped, I'll try to find the fastest Ped time as well.

The Shadow holds both sprint & distance records.

6.99sec. over 100mts (51.5kph)I think thats about 109 yds.

and 24.07sec over 362mts (54.15kph) about 396yds.

this is on a round sand track.

the peds are quite a bit slower though
