Ive bought a puppy from a bad breeder Im ashamed because I did my homework on 'what/who to avoid' and it still happened. I feel like I can't talk to my family so Ive come here. Sorry for the long post..
So, in the Spring, we decided we would get a dog in the near future. I saved up, did my research and kept my eyes and ears open for any litters being born. In November, I saw an advert for a litter of springer pups that ticked all the right boxes for me (well socialised, born in the home, other dogs and cats, around young children, would be flea'd, wormed and chipped, only to the right, loving homes, mum can be seen'. and the pups in the photos looked beautiful and healthy, and with mum in a family home.
My hubby agrees to drive over 80 miles to see them, taking along our young child for the long journey.
On arrival, exhausted, we find a tatty old farm building with a caravan. Immediately I realise this doesn't look right and tell my hubby so, and was just about to ask about going back to the car when the owner appears with the pups mother running free, and is very friendly and invites us into the van. There we see the pups and their mum together. The owners explain that they had brought the building and were renovating it into a family home, and living onsite...this made sense as there were building materials around. There weren't any sights/sounds of any dogs- so not a puppy farm? The owners seemed knowledgable and friendly and the pups were attached to them. The caravan had puppy toys, beds, 2 crates and everything you would find in a family home, so it seemed ok. The owners said she was a good and healthy little girl.
I fall in love with a beautiful little pup, and the owner asks if I would like to take her that night. I hesitate, saying we had only come to look (I also wanted to talk to my hub about my fears privately) but she said 'theres no point driving all that way again- you may as well take her now', and my hubby agrees, in front of her. I hadn't any cash on me so they accepted a bank transfer into the owners account. Before you know it, were in the car on the way home.
On the way home, the pup is very, very quiet and still. I assume its because she's nervous and had just been separated fro her mum so was bound to be off. At home, she perked up, had something to eat and settled for the night..all seemed well. Over the next few days she starts getting diarrhoea. I take her to the vets, and they give her a paste and some sensitive food and send me home £55 lighter. Another few days pass and she's still got the runs and starts throwing up. She's also very, very lethargic. I rush her back to the vets, and she's given antibiotics. Sent home with another hefty bill, and I could tell by the looks I got from my vet that she had doubts about this dog. I had to nurse the poor thing- syringing water into her mouth and wondering if she was going to survive the night. Thank God she did and is ok now.
I contacted the breeder/owner and she denies all knowledge of any illness, and said she was in regular contact with the other pups new owners and no problems reported.
Luckily our girl is ok now and growing well. However, theres one more problem- she was advertised as a springer- but as she gets older I'm realising she isn't a full one. Springer cross I believe. I contacted the breeder again and asked if she would mind telling me what she was seeing as she clearly wasn't a full springer- she's ignoring my messages.
Ive been looking online and have noticed that she has been re advertising some of the pups-I assume people have been returning their puppies for some reason (probably realising they've been hoodwinked into buying a crossbreed or a sick pup). I noticed that she changes the location each time she re advertises.
We love our girl to pieces and have every intention of keeping her no matter what breed she is or the fact I may have bought a sickly dog for life- but I can't believe I let this happen. Ive just had to let it off my chest because Ive been beating myself up no end.
