First I lost his ball on a rope, his favourite outdoor toy! (We're on the 3 one as keep loosing them!)

Then he wouldn't come back.

Austin's recal is pretty good, but our main problem is that is he sees another dog he will run off to see them and ignore me (and the liver treats I have).

He will then not come back until I go and get him. And I can't use the "i'm really sorry he's only young" excuse for ever.

This morning he saw another dog, not far away and ran up to it and was playing with it. The owner and dog were ok with him and I tried to call him as we walked past. The lady and her dog continued in the other direction and I thought this would be a good test to see if he will come with me.

I walked around the corner a bit, still calling him and he just stayed with the lady and her dog.

We sometimes play hide and seek on a walk to keep him interested in us and it works well, but with another dog he forgets!

So I had to walk back and get him (and he rolled in fox poo so had to have a shower this morning which made me late for work :angryfire: Hopefully that's my 3 for today!).

I want to try some agility or flyball with him next year. I can see him being quite good, but not until I've sussed the lack of hearing around other dogs.

Bluebell does exactly the same!

I usually walk away calling (never go towards her) and I'm lucky enough that she tends to come, this morning she went to go back again and I shouted and she turned back to me - was very pleased with her.

So sorry - not much help, although I am very alert, and put her on the lead when dogs come over the horizon, until I know who it is.

You are certainly not alone. My boy is 2 and his recall is brilliant until he sees another dog. Yesterday he was playing with a girlie dog that he really fancied so they had a good play and then I kept hold of his collar until they were nearly out of sight and when I let him go he flew like the wind to catch up with her to have another play. I shouted and shouted, blew the whistle but he completely ignored me and the owner of the other dog continued to walk on so I had to run up to them to catch him :rant: you know how warm it was yesterday :sweating:

I play hide and seek with him often and he is usually so worried about losing me that he doesn't wander far away but he knows that I am ever so slightly MORE scared of losing him and is confident that I won't walk the other way and sadly he's right the little sod!

He used to do this with all dogs but now it is just certain nice girlies so I promise they do get better with age but have their moments :angry:

Poppy is actually really good at recall around other dogs, much to my surprise!

Its a different story when its just other people though, she tries to follow them and I sometimes have to go and get her! (w00t)

I just practise recall all the time, hopefully she will learn! Heaven help me if she sees a bunny!

ok this might seem strange, but it works for me.............if she wont come back, i shout her name and run in the opposite direction, waving my arms around and then lie on the ground and wave my arms and legs around shouting her name................i look so stupid she always comes back to see what im doing :b

now if you try this, be ready for some very strange looks from other people, and even some strange remarks :- "

I do the same as hely .......Run in the opposite direction whilst waving my arms about in a high excited voice :b ......The other trick is to teach them a command that means you've found something really REALLY exciting ..... I use "quick mouses" or "come and see"......this tells them I think I've found something in the grass ....It sends my lot wild looking for the imaginary mouse :b

i charge £500 a hour for my very entertaining antics............its works a treat for gypsy, although if she could talk, im sure she would call me a silly cow :- "
