Hello and merry christmas to all.

Earlier on a walk one of my whippets cut a pad on his paw quite badly (don't know on what) - we've not come across this type of injury before as in the past we've only had minor pad nicks and we're not sure if it is a job for the vet. The whole pad is split from side to side and it was bleeding quite badly earlier - we've soaked the foot in water and savlon and it's bandaged at the mo to stop it getting dirty. Any advice would be welcome, we're not even sure if they stitch pads.

Thank you

Jill

Hi and Mwerry Christmas

Just what you need :(

If the pad is split right across and there is damage to the underlying tissue, I would say definately vets.

If the damage is right across but only on the surface, you may be fine just keeeping and eye on it and keeping it clean with salt water baths.

The would should be dressed when your whippet is outside and I would restrict his walks to lead only for 7-10 days depending on how bad it is to allow time to heal.

Vets tmorrow or when they next open may be the best option in you are unsure. Your Dog may be better with an AB shot to prevent infection especially if it is deep and you are not sure what he injured his foot on.

Good luck :luck:

Sorry to hear this. If it's a bad cut agree probably best to take him to the vet to get it checked over. Yes, pads can be stitched but see what your vet recommends. - plus he can dress it properly for you. The biggest problem is keeping infection out of it. In the meantime, bathing in salt water is probably better than water and savlon but keeping it clean is priority.

Do hope he heals up soon, - don't they pick their times! :luck: :luck:

Thank you for your advice, we're just on our way to the vets in a moment. It's hard to say how deep it is as it was bleeding so much when we bandaged it so better to be safe than sorry. Thanks again.

Hi

Cut pads do bleed profusely and can be quite alarming.

It is however better to err on the safe side and get the vet to check the wound. The vet can ensure that it is properly cleaned and can check that there is nothing inbedded in the cut deep down.

I hope the trip to the vets went OK. Just what you need on a Sunday at Christmas

Hi, the wound did need stitching and therefore we had to leave Merlin at the vets to be sedated, we did however get to pick him up last night so he didn't have to spend the whole night there. He is feeling very sorry for himself today. Yes you are right we could of done without all that hassle on boxing day, although it could be worse, it could of happened on xmas day itself. One of my friends had a marble table collapse on her dog xmas day and spent hours at the vets, poor thing was lucky to survive. Thanks again for all advice, I can always count on K9 when i'm not sure about something.
