Hi,

New to the forum, I'm looking for a pup, preferably a male, Bedlington Whippet cross for end of April or May if possible. I don't mind if there is a bit of another breed mixed in there as long as it doesn't turn out to be a large dog. This is to be a family pet rather than a working dog but I grew up with whippet lurchers so that's what I want for the family. The date is quite important because it's my sons seventh birthday and we want to suprise him - we told him he can have a dog when he is eight so that we don't get nagged to death this year! I've also got a two week holiday from work over Easter so I can spend more time with the pup before leaving him in the care of my dog inexperienced wife.

If anyone has a litter due at that time or knows of a litter that is within easy travel distance of Leeds could they please let me know. Of course if there isn't anything available at that time we will wait but Easter would be the perfect time.

Please don't suggest the adult dogs at the rescue centres - I know there are a lot of lurchers there but I think for an inexperienced wife and son a pup is the way to go.

Glad to hear anyone is having a family pet. But I wouldn't rule out the rescue dogs some come with lots of history and information about them. Usually they are of all ages. Bedlington lurcher boys can be quite a dominant handful for experienced dog qwners. So I'd suggest more towards a whippet , or a bitch. Only trying to be helpful. Good luck with getting the right dog for your family, failing that you could get a new wife LOL Only joking of course !

There are also lots of puppies coming into rescue - more now than I have ever known. Greyhound GAP have recently taken in some whole litters of lurchers, also pregnant bitches so the pups are born in rescue and are well looked after and socialised from the start.

Obviously it's your decision if you would consider a pup from rescue, but just mentioning it because people often assume you don't get young pups available - sadly far from the case atm.

Now I understand why I am finding my boy such a handful!! I've had whippets for 20 years but my whippet/bedlington (9 months old) is a real handful, and so, so different from the whippies.

Love him to bits though.

Different is good it makes a change. But they've got terrier in their make up, and boy does it show. They are gorgeous strong minded dogs and fearfully loyal, just you need to be more careful to show them who is boss, especially during the teenage tear away phase. But well worth all the effort, and boy can they run. I love mine , he's still flying at 9 . Keep his spirits, just try and mould them .... Good Luck Kay
