just curious to know how old your dogs r b4 u put them round the bends and wot sieze dog r they? ie no limit or lightweight? cheerz

We are very lucky in that we have a regular bend club, we can trial however we like and from wherever we like, i'd say all the dogs in the last couple of years from our end have been trialled down the back straight some time before 12 months old. I have no experience of trying older dogs though.

i.m.o. our roddy 30lb was competent on the straights put behind the lure at 11 1/2 month.schooled on the bends at 14/15 month.

sadie is 19 month schooled on the straights at 12 month as she is 36 ish.

she has had a couple of hand slips just before the first bend, and will try her out of traps sunday. not a lover of early schooling like to see them 11 month + so they are set up and fully grown.sadie a bit later as bend season just starting.

We trial dogs for straights or bends at around 1 year old but a lot of them have been around the traps from an early age seeing their siblings racing so know whats going on.

Jinx was 2 before she was introduced to racing and has picked up straights very well but as soon as she loses sight of the lure on the bends she stops before continuing on.A bit frustrating but Im sure shell pick it up very soon.

All dogs are different and as such require a different format in their training --every owner should know what stage their dog is at and if they are sound on their legs i personally give my dogs lots of free running on the beach to build strength up in their legs and have had most of my dogs ready to run the bends at as early as eight months

--the ones i have now are just short of twelve months old and have just started bend running last night and took to it like a duck to water ---

Alva my 17lb bitch pup had two runs from half way up back straight to trip so she will go from traps next week and do the full circuit--

my dog pup Barney had two runs half way up back straight round top bend and down finishing straight then later did the lot trap to trip and i was well pleased with his performance as it was his first time and he seems fine today no problems---

hope this helps

steve

ps it is a must to have a good lure driver who can speed it up and slow it down at the right times keeping it under the dogs nose that way they wont loose sight of it we are very luck in the north west with this ----

our ruby(27lb) went on the track last night we thought she had done the bends before ,it was pretty obvious that she had not, so she is being schooled like a pup she is two years old and she is picking it up quick, she does a lot of free running and is a fast learner ,just go off your own dog and how you feel ,we have a greyhound who can go in a straight line but is rubbish at bends she will not do bends (our cally for those who know her)

i think little dogs can be schooled earlier than bigger dogs just my opinion :)) and a few vets :- " 12 month is too soon for larger dogs the growth plates need time to develop I'm along the same lines as David h as far as age for schooling on bends:thumbsup:

Well as people say everyone is different Bob is 27lb and Danny 21lb/22lb but I dont pup my dogs on the bends till they are about 18month or over depending on there date of birth but thats just my opinion

Umbro is 15 months now and will be schooling in the couple of weeks. Dad want's to school Cindy on the bends but at 11months and half greyhound I've said she'll run the handycap during the winter then do straights next year she nearly be 2 before she does the bends. Like Gary say's the growth plates take a fair while to stop growning. You don't see greyhounds running under 12 month's. But the world would be a funny place if we were all the same.

Ross (Nch Crack O Dawn) was schooled on the bends at about 12 months old, he took to it no bother, he only went round 4 trips of the bends till Sep time, just to get him used to it with other whippet's and also a young greyhound, that he beet (w00t) . When he was about 17 months old. We took him to the champs and he won his first Nbch on an outside lure (first time he has seen the outside lure) (w00t) He used to school over the winter months on the bends and then after the BWRA Bend champs onto the straight's again :D He was a good bend dog, loved the distance, but now we dont run the bends only straight racing :- "

Every dog is different, so go slow and get them used to the lure and the corners slowly :D ,,when you think the time is right, hand slip from the traps, then in the traps  You will know your dog well, Go at their pace :- " ,,

This only mho , you might think different

hiya carol we are going to train roger around them soon before the bending seaon to get him ready. hes the same age as shay lol :huggles:

i think theperson who owns the dog will know his own dog/bitch

and now when they are ready same as with children they all dont develop

the same some take longer than others

ive known a dog a racing champat 15mths but there not all the same
