Hi, I'm new here, so hope it's ok to post this here. We're thinking of getting a dog at some point in the future and I've always loved King Charles as some of our family members have them and they're so lovely. However, my husband prefers larger dogs having owned a German Shepherd in the past and we fell in love with a Bernese Mountain Dog we saw last year, but have never met another one so haven't come across enough to know much about them. We've read up about them a lot on the internet, but I don't feel it's the same as actually knowing someone with one. Does anyone here have one or know where I might be able to meet some to get to know a bit more about them? To give a little on our family...My husband had a German Shepherd in the past before I met him and I had 2 Lhasa Apso's. When we got together and when my son was small we got a Golden Retriever, but I had bad PND with my son and he was only a few months old and it was too much for us so we unfortunately had to rehome her and I was gutted. Once my son was a little older and I was well again we were ready for a dog and went to a dog home where they recommended a collie, who seemed lovely, but whilst they were getting the paperwork for the dog we were sat in a waiting area with the dog just gently petting her and she suddenly out of the blue lunged at my son and cut his head quite badly and had to have stitches so obviously the dog wasn't as perfect for us as the home thought and it did make us a little nervous for a while, but having spent time around dogs in parks, etc we've regained our trust in dogs and would like to get one next year when my little girl will be at nursery and I'll have some time for the dog as my little boy is in school. My little girl will be 3 and my son will be 7 by the time we're ready for the dog, but we want to do plenty research first to make sure we take on the right dog. Our experience at the dogs home has definitely made us feel we're happier with a puppy which we know the history of and it's used to growing up with the children and our way of life. We have our own enclosed garden and I don't currently work, but will at some point be finding a job that fits around the children so it won't be left on it's own too much during the day and we're obviously looking for a family dog, not a guard dog and deffo not a dog that will show any sign of aggression although I know this is down to training. If anyone's able to share any information about Bernese Mountain Dogs and if they may be right for our family I'd be most grateful. I'd obviously want to take it to training classes and will have lots time for training once the children are in school/nursery and have lots of time for walks and playing in the garden. Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read this and respond, ta x
