Hi we are a 2 adult 2 children (aged 6&2) family and are looking to find a good family dog. But want to make sure the dog gets as much from us as we do from the dog.

We are looking for a smallish good natured type with not to much exercise required. Maybe 2 x 15-20 walks per day.

Thinking about a Cookapoo at the minute but open to any other suggestions.

Hi there,

Cockapoo are spaniels crossed with a toy poodle. One a working dog and the other a toy dog. A very high energy dog, who needs a lot of exercise and a lot of time and training spent on it, as they love to get into everything. They are not an official breed as you may know but the 2 breeds seperately need a lot of work.

they are very cute dogs, there is no denying that but you need to know about the breed in order to establish whether they will fit into your family.

Bichon Frises are very good small family dogs, as they will walk for miles, but also just as happy to curl up on the sofa with you for cuddles.

French bull dogs are in the same catagory, as are Pugs. Pugs dont need a lot of exercise so 2x 20 minute walks a day will be fine, but they are very very clever dogs, and people underestimate them, so training is key! Saying that, training is key with any dog.

King Charles cavaliers are known to be lap dogs. They will sleep all day if you let them, but they will also bomb about playing in a field or at home if you let them.

The best place to go is Crufts. I think the next one is February/March time. They have an A-Z of dog breeds and you can speak to the breeders there in respect of breeds you are interested in. They will tell you straight if the breed will be right for your family. I did that with my dog, and thats the reason why I got a Lab, as he suits my lifestyle. You can also look around to see if any other breed is suitable. You never know you may end up with a bigger dog!

New Foundlands are the best for familys, as are St Bernards and Mastiffs!! Plus they are total couch potaots! This is clearly on the otherside of the coin size wise, but i think you can get where I'm going with this :)

Please do your research and talk to breeders. if you do this you will make the right decision.

You can even email a few that you will find on the kennel club site if you cant make Crufts.

i emailed a fair few. It took me 4 months to decide on a breed.

Good luck x

Thanks very much for this. I have some to a couple of cockapoo owners and will go to a breeder direct to ask the questions.
