Hi all, my bichon frise is almost 4, we've had her a year. She was always a little bit nervous on walks because she didn't go for walks before we got her - she would usually be ok but if people came out of their houses and shocked her or quickly bent to stroke her she would jump and bark. We have recently moved in with my partner's parents who have one older dog (who now comes on some walks) and a puppy. Most of her walks are now in quieter areas. Now she barks all the time at people on walks and she seems to be worse in different areas (fine on the beach but barks at people on the street and runs up to bark at people when she is off her lead in the park). Any advice appreciated! Thanks.

Hello there - Welcome to Dog Forum!

It sounds like she may be feeling a little stressed at the change.

Maybe a calming plug in like Pet Remedy may help?

She does sound like a very anxious girl.

I love the pet remedy plug ins, definitely worth a go :)

Hi i have a bichon frise too.

Th reason they bark is usually they were not socialised properly as a puppy. Bichons are renowned for it. It is a small dog syndrome thingy.

They believe in order to be noticed they have to bark and loudly. However, because they were not socialised they have not found the right 'tone'. My boy uses a very aggressive tone but all he wants is to say hello. He is also 'top' dog in our house and therefore needs the others to know he can shout louder.

As long as they are not physically aggressive it is just a case of ignoring it apologising to the people you meet but above all let her approach people. if you try and separate her from other people it will get worse. I also found that if our bichon is off the lead he is verbally aggressive. But he has never physically attacked another dog infact he approaches them read to play. good luck. Bichons are very affecionate and loving animals and a joy to have.
