Hi all, I am new here. Yesterday we contacted a rescue centre with a view to applying to adopt a dog they had on their website, only to be sent an apology and be told that we are outside catchment!

Now, I had thought that dog and cat rescue centres were crying out for adopters at the moment and that tge main criteria would be that any new potential owners were the right match for tge dog in question and vice versa. I didnt expect to get a categorical no just because we dont live round the corner!! Distance is 40 miles!

It might be that they want to do a home visit before they adopt out a dog - and maybe also to check afterwards that the dog has settled in well. Also, dogs who have had an unsettled past are often stressed by travelling - they may think they are going to be abandoned again - so they want to minimise the travel time. In general, it's more reassuring when a rescue is picky about where their dogs end up rather than letting anyone have any of their dogs - it shows they are putting the dogs' welfare first rather than getting a high turnover.

Good luck with finding the right dog for you :)
