Greetings fellow coursers. Please try to relieve my confusion on the above subject. If a person takes a whippet ,which is in season , to participate in a whippet coursing event and to do so is not against the rules of the club is that person acting irresponsibly? Equally, is a club official within his/her rights to suggest to a member thet he removes his dog from the stake when no interference whatever is taking place,ie no male dog is distracted by the bitch, and no rule exists to prevent said member from continuing.

Also ,was a senior club official wrong to suggest to a member ,following a members wish to withdraw an in season bitch from a stake last year, that there was no rule preventing participation thereby infering that the member should continue?

The views of fellow coursers ( if you dare that is :) ) will be appreciated

Temporarily confused

umm as always from the main man another interesting but non the less important issue to descuss.

My own personal view is that no bitch that is in season should be taken to a coursing meeting and yes I must say my own view is that it would be an irrisponsible act to take an in season bitch to any kind of meeting whether Coursing, Racing or showing.

BUT if there is no rule in place regarding in season bitch's at a meeting/club then I would say it leaves a big loop hole that needs addressing then everyone knows where they stand and it would then avoid future confusion, but in saying that you could also argue that if there is no rule in place to stop it then it must be acceptable at that club/meeting.

I would say that from experiance of having several bitch's in the same house that it's not only dogs that could be put off by an in season bitch as ours often act differantly when 1 of our girls are in season (attempting to mate each other ect just as a dog would with an in season bitch)

OMG, Sorry Lampy but on this rare occassion I have to agree with Mark!

Like he says though if there is no rule, it's a massive loophole! :b

Owners of "boy" dogs would be horrified (rightly so) if a bitch in season was on the card - more especially if the bitch was in slips with the dog.

I have absolutely no knowledge of the situation to which you are referring, but having had boy dogs nearly always, I would consider it particularly irresponsible and very unsporting to enter a bitch in season - normally they are withdrawn if they come into season before (or on the day of) the meeting.

Frankly, I think a rule forbidding bitches in season would be implemented if people were selfish enough to enter them.

It's supposed to be a "sport" for goodness sake - with "sporting" attitudes.... there's no money at stake here with whippets.

Wonder what the rule is in greyhound coursing - where the purse is very considerable - bet they have made allowances for such an occurrence.

As always, many thanks for your replies. I am also of the view that biches in season should not take part in any mixed event, despite the fact that we did attend. On previous occasions I have never taken such a bitch to a meeting. I made an exception on this occasion as she is to be mated and this meeting represented the last chance this season for her to have run. No dogs were put off, nobody inconvenienced. The bitch had two runs then I withdrew her as I thought she had had enough.

I will be pushing for more openness and clarity on this subject from the club in question and/or NWCC.

Still striving for fairness

In North America there are very strict rules about bitches in season not being entered and in some cases not even permitted on the field. Showing an in season bitch is permitted however. I think the distinction is made because in the show ring, the dogs are supposedly under handler control at all times. ;) At all lure coursing and racing events, bitches are checked for in season. In coursing the one organization states no bitch in season shall be entered in a regular stake.
