ive heard conflicting stories re wether a bitch who has had pups will ever look the same in the ring

what are your views ?

intrested because

1) jan is my star at showing

2) if she didnt get back in the ring then i was going to show one of her pus BUT as i am only keeping bitches and bliss will never be shown i will be stuck without something to show :(

3) mouse hates showing :(

how have you found your bitches ? have they done as well after a litter or even better than before they had one , or did they never look or perform the same ?

Some bitches actually improve after having a litter IMO. NOt That Jan Could Improve Much on Perfection

Fit healthy bitch will bounce back in no time. :luck:

Although long haired breeds may take bit longer for their coat to get back into their full formal glory.

My advice is not to let the pups hang off her forever. When you wean them, wean them!

Vitamin B6 for her afterwards to help tighten up the saggy bits :)) Lots of good healthy food and a bit of oil/sardines/vitamin E for the coat.

Get her back into a normal active routine as soon as possible.

I've found this has worked with all of my bitches.

Layla had a litter in 2004 and has continued to win since then. She is by no means dominant but she gets her fair share.

In my experience, a litter has NEVER made a scrap of difference with regards to the bitches hitting the show ring again - my Lulu had a couple of litters & went on to become a Grand Champion :D My bitches have always hit the ring after a litter (unless of course they have been retired from the ring  )

My babies often are fully weaned by 8wks (maybe the odd suckle here & there but the bitch is usually way over it by this time!!) and usually within a couple of weeks they are all tucked up again

I road walk & free run my dogs on our hills on our land - I find that if a bitch has had a litter - just a wee bit more effort is required to get that muscle condition back up to peak - often they lose it in a flash & it takes a bit of time to get it back, but brisk road walking of 3 or 4 km's each day with some free galloping gets them back into shape pretty quick smart

Go beat the feet - your girl will be fine

thanks everyone

i will book her in for aqua areobics now then (w00t)

and thanks claire

im glad im not the only one who thinks she is a star

Agree with the above, and I too like Claire think that a litter can in certain cases be the making of a bitch.

Road work in my opinion is one of if not THE most important part of building a dog back up into "hard" condition and is very often over looked,if combined with a good "blow out" a few times a week your bitch will be back to her usual pre whelp state. I also agree with Lana about not leaving the pups on Mum too long.

Sometime bitch seems more matured after a litter.

I usually leave it up to her when she wants to stop feeding. I always give the girls escape route and place the pups cannot get to them. At about 4 weeks my bitches start bringing food in for the pups, so that is a signal for me to start making up Farex (or what ever). I feed my pregnant and nursing bitches several times a day, up to 5 times during the most demanding time; from late pregnancy till weanning. I only had one bitch to loose condition when having pups, but she had 15 pups (w00t) .

I let the girls to run around our garden as much as they want and by the time the pups are fully weaned the girls look in pretty good shape, and their nipples shrink in no time too. I always listen to the bitch, she knows best :)

Bess 2.5 month after her 3rd litter was born
