Hi Guys,

I noticed yesterday that my 1 yr old JRT (at least I think it's him, haven't caught him "in the act" as yet) is producing black hard faeces.

He had vomited 2ce one night and then the following morning at the weekend, just clear liquid, alittle foamy. But he seems in fine form otherwise.

He has lost weight over the last two weeks, starting to look ribby again as he did when he first moved here in December. Not sure if this is linked, but just gave it a mention.

Both dogs are fed Burns chicken and rice. Over the last few days they have got the odd dollop of bio yoghurt. They've also been having peanut butter mixed with some of their food in their kongs.

Any thoughts on what may be causing the black, hard faeces? If it doesn't clear up by tomorrow I'll be bringing him to the vets.

Hi

I would certainly take him to the vet with him losing weight as well. If you can take a sample of the poo with you as the vet can then use it for tests.

Its one of those could be anything or nothing things

Sorry I cant be more help but I hope hes feeling better soon

Marie

I really don't want to scare you because there are lots of things it could be, but black faeces *could* possibly be caused by dried blood in the stools, indicating some internal bleeding.

It is probably something much less serious, but if it has started suddenly then it's something I would want to get checked out sooner rather than later.

Good luck, and I hope all is well and he's better soon :luck:

i agree take him to the vets with a sample, its better to be safe than sorry.

Hi Guys,

We went for a walk this afternoon and Archie's stools are back to normal again. I'm none the wiser as to what caused it.

I'll be keeping a close eye over the next few days and if it starts up again he'll be off to the vet.

Thanks so much for your replies.

Hopefully it's nothing to worry about. Alfie is allowed to snack on Burns and when he eats a large volume he often produces rock-hard black poo :x

Have you fed him any charcoal biscuits (i think winalot biscuits have a charcoal flavour)? This can cause a stools to look black.

thats good news im glad he is ok, dont they just love to make us worrie

I hadn't fed him anything like this at all. I had even thought if I had fed any dark green leafy veg or such incase it was an increase of iron or something causing it, but I hadn't.

The only out of normal thing was peanut butter mixed with his usual food, put into his kong.

All appears normal since, so hopefully it won't happen again. :sweating:

Black faeces do usaully indicate bleeding into the gut.

However my girls had some charcoal bonios the other week and they produced black ones then too.
