BOLT
**UPDATED: SEPTEMBER 2013**
Location: Kennels in Norfolk, UK. Bolt would love a foster home while he waits for his forever family.
Key Points: Beautiful dog, few hang-ups, good first hound for someone, dog savvy, clean when in house, shares well, affectionate, learning to play, needs recall & basic command work, walks to heel, good in car.
Meet the beautiful Bolt. He is a 3 year old ex-racing greyhound boy who has no idea just how lucky he’s been. Bolt was brought in to a vet clinic to be put to sleep, but luckily enough one of our volunteers happens to work at this clinic, and swept Bolt away from under the needle. Bolt is a lovely black dog who’s coat is greatly improving now that he’s getting regular TLC. He is 29” to the shoulder but quite slender and has a lovely little white heart on his chest.
~ Personality ~
Generally: Beautiful character, sweet, loyal, loving, friendly, affectionate, easy-going, passive, couch potato.
Bolt is a really lovely, easy going gentleman dog and we so dearly hope he isn’t overlooked for months just because he’s black. He is a total sweetheart and has oodles of gentle love and companionship to give to whomever gives him space on their sofa.
Bolt has a lovely laid back but friendly character that is incredibly easy to get along with. He can slot in anywhere really. He is very affectionate and has a few moments of bouncy joy each day but generally lives up to the greyhound ‘couch potato’ motto. He loves all people and trusts immediately despite the background he came from. Bolt would be an excellent candidate for a first time hound owner as he is so perfectly laid back and has few hang-ups.
~ In the Home ~
Generally: Not yet in a home at nights, good during day, needs work on basic commands, shares very well, great with resident dogs, loves company, starting to play.
For the last 8 weeks Bolt has been sleeping in a kennel at night but coming into the house during the day. So though he has not full-time lived in a home, he is still somewhat familiar with what a home is. He has been clean in the house when he’s there, loves everyone, and shares excellently well with other dogs of varying sizes, shapes and personalities. He loves canine company and follows their lead, but is also content to be alone at times and might be suitable as an only dog if required. He simply needs further work on his basic commands as its clear he’s not used to being addressed with words.
Bolt is now starting to copy his canine playmates and pick up toys, though is still a bit unsure of himself. It’s a joy to see him come out of his shell more and not take life so seriously. Bolt has his goofy moments with other dogs too and these are also increasing with frequency.
~ Other Animals ~
Generally: Very sociable, dog savvy, calm and confident, excellent choice for canine friend, not cat friendly.
Bolt has been excellent with all the dogs he has met regardless of size, shape and temperament. He carries himself with a quiet confidence that seems to put other dogs at ease. Bolt is also very non-confrontational and simply walks away if grumbled at. This boy would be an excellent calming companion for a resident pooch, but would also slot nicely into an existing pack. He would be very suitable to a canine home where the parents work during the day as he has quite low energy requirements.
~ Out and About ~
Generally: Gentleman, mannerly, social, walks to heel, no recall yet, doesn’t pull, loves car.
Bolt walks very well on the lead and is a gentleman. He is calm and mannerly in meeting other dogs and people, and doesn’t seem to do more than prick his ears upon sighting a cat. Like most greyhounds, Bolt is a complete couch potato and does not need a huge amount of exercise. He will be content with two 30min walks a day and perhaps a chance to stretch his legs offlead in a safe area once or twice a week.
Bolt has learned to come to his name in the house, but recall work when offlead is still very much a work in progress. Basically Bolt has never been in a free, offlead situation before and so is not used to needing to come to his owner, usually they come get him from the kennel run. This recall development will come with some time and bonding with his owner. Once recall is mastered, Bolt should be suitable to be let offlead in safe areas away from public roads or livestock, with a certain level of common sense and care given if very small dogs such as Yorkshire terriers are around. He loves traveling in the car.
~ Greyhounds as Pets ~
In general greyhounds are very calm, mannerly dogs that are used to being handled. They can fit into a wide range of different lifestyles and usually adjust to the home life very quickly. Their soft, easy going nature often makes them ideal to live in a family with children, while their love of lazing around and low exercise requirements can make them perfect for the elderly.
~ Where Am I? ~
Bolt is currently in kennels in Norfolk. He can be homed anywhere in the UK provided we have a homechecker available, but please note that you may be required to travel to our rescue to meet and collect him.
~ Want To Adopt Me? ~
Bolt is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. This dear boy would benefit so very much from a chance to live in a foster home and Kerry Greyhounds UK is always eager for new foster volunteers. It is an extremely rewarding experience and costs are covered by us.
If you are interested in adopting or fostering Bolt, you can contact me (Tam) via email: tam@kerrygreyhounds.co.uk, or speak directly to Bronwen by phoning: 075 000 62648. Emails are usually replied to within 24 hrs.
There are application forms for both adopting and fostering Bolt, and we will ask you to fill the relevant one in as the first step in the adoption/fostering process. To speed up this process, we recommend you do this before emailing/calling. You can find the forms, as well as further information on our homing & fostering procedures, on either the Adoption Page: http://s300889640.websitehome.co.uk/uk/adoption.html or Fostering Page: http://s300889640.websitehome.co.uk/uk/Fostering.html .
Thank you.
