Our Border Terrier is 13 years old and has been totally healthy, until now. 3 weeks ago she went off her food and just stood around the garden until she deposited some strange looking faeces. A little regular poo and some wormlike matter, all encased in a red jelly like fluid. She was leaving little red blobs around the garden. At tea time her appetite returned and she was back to normal.

Until yesterday when she did a repeat performance. She passed a little watery fluid, then a little runny poo, upon which she dragged herself on the lawn. She then deposited almost identical matter to 3 weeks ago on the lawn. Again after this episode, she is normal again, eating like a horse and pooing as one would expect.

I showed the vet the pictures and I was surprised that with their experience that they were mystified and at this moment I am waiting for a phonecall to see if they are now any the wiser. I then thought about this forum and thought hopefully there might be someone here who has seen this before.

I hope you are not eating if you look at the pictures.

I hope I can attach the photos, the one with everything spread out (photo taken after I tried to hose it away) was the incident 3 weeks ago, the red blob pic was yesterday.

We are due to go to France in 2 weeks, but won't leave our dog if there is a question mark over her health.

I have my fingers crossed that someone can offer sound advice.

Hi it looks a bit like my staffy does when she has a bout of colitis. She goes off her food, does a lot of stretching as though she has a sore tummy, her stomach makes gurgling noises and she looks like she is hungry but just sniffs her food. Her poo looks similar not so bloody but mucousy like your dogs. I normally leave her until the evening and then give her some cooked fish and mashed potato (no milk)and in small quantities.I do this for couple of days then introduce her food back in. We took her off her kibble and put her on a gluten and wheat free one with raw minced tripe or minced chicken. Glad to say we have hardly had any episodes since then. You can also get pro-kolin which is great stuff but not sure if you can order from some of the internet vet med sites.

Hope you get to the bottom of the problem! pardon the pun!

Many thanks for your helpful reply. The vet phoned back and said that my pictures were not clear enough(how clear does he want them?) but he did mention Colitus as a possiblity. I will look at your diet suggestions and see if that makes a difference. I think we can look forward to our holiday.

Kind regards

Norman

You're welcome. It's scary stuff when you see the blood obviously if things don't get better I would get the vet to run some tests as it could be more sinister at that age. A lot of dogs with colitis and other food intolerances do very well on a raw diet it has to be introduced slowly and also the kibble must be gluten and wheat free. Duck and potato, salmon and rice are both very good. It was a vet who recommended giving her mashed potato and fish as she would not take boiled rice. I get the fish portions from Morrisons in the frozen aisle they are just basics and you get 5 for £1 odd, good to have as an emergency. Let us know how you get on

Well, I took all of your advice and she has not had another bout.

We cancelled our holiday to France, as it was only 2 weeks to go and the previous sickness had happened after 3 weeks. We took her in our caravan to Derbyshire and she was fine,we were also better as we did not have to worry about her from across the channel.

We changed her diet to Chappie (horrible smell) and no longer give her any milk. I always gave her my breakfast milk left in my bowl (for 13 years) and she is better, perhaps intolerent to milk. I am not saying that all this is the reason she is better, but she is better!

Many, many thanks for your help, you really did make a difference. We are thinking of changing vet's.

I would respectfully.suggest that if it happens again you scrape up a sample and take it To the vet especially if it is bloody. And change your et as you suggest.!!
