Hi All,

Just had to tell you all about our evening walk, wev'e just got back now with two very pleased with them selfs doggies :D

I walk in a huge field where there is tons of rabbits, Chance flies after them but has never ever caught one, (they go in dense undergrowth), so we carried on our walk up towards the stream,

Binx was bouncing around in the long grass when he spotted something moving, he pounced and flushed out a squirrel!!

Chance then took the lead and caught it, Binx was on it too, with it being the first time any of them had caught anything they dropped it!

it started to squeak then I was shouting at hubby to save it, then Chance picked it up in her mouth and crushed it to death and dropped it, (this all happened in the space of about 20 seconds) Binx picked it up then and carried it around like a trophy,

after a little fight between Binx and hubby to get the squirrel off him, he plopped it into the stream, both dogs were very proud of them selfs and my hubby was chuffed to bits, Chance then went into hunting mode, but didn't catch anything else,

I on the other hand will have to get used to it seeing as I have natural born hunters, I just couldn't help feel sorry for the poor little thing though, :(

(my hubby wants to get us both kitted out with lamping gear now! )

lol@Mark yeah right!!

what has really suprised me about all this is Binx even though he's only 5 months old has that 'killer' instinct!!

he's not been trained to do this nor has Chance but it sooo comes naturally to them it's amazing!

it's great watching them both 'hunting' by the undergrowth because they can smell the rabbits (it's just to dense though to get in) they go up and down by there sniffing in the little pathways the rabbits have made

does this come 'natural' to all sighthounds from birth?

we also met a billy goat on our walk too, Binx has such a big attitude for a small dog and was very brash with the goat, growling and barking (w00t)

Hi Tina,

Most sighthounds given the chance will show their inborn ability to hunt, a well bred dog takes very little training if any they just need the opertunity to develope their skills by having the opertunity to explore ect.

so whens the rabbit pie ;)

:x :x rabbit pie!!

I've been teasing my kids about that though (w00t) (w00t) squirrel butties!! :x

my brother was gutted he didn't come on the walk with us, he's been hounding me to take out Chance for a nights hunt! but she's a mummies girl and won't leave me

Well you go with him then, go on lass get them out 1 night and have some fun! you might even get a few bunnies for the freezer.

I'm sorta half and half at the moment, I was shouting at hubby to save the squirrel!!

I felt really upset about the poor little thing, but I suppose you do get used to it,

but I won't hunt for fun it would have to be either for food :x or the man up the road who loves rabbit stew

if my snakes were bigger I would feed them with it

I'd love to go lamping Scott just for the thrill of the chase, I'm not sure I'd want them to catch something though,

I'd deffo have to go a few times with someone who does it often just so I could get used to the sight and sounds of a kill, I'd proberly bring back all the injured rabbits and nurse them back to health (w00t)

lmao@littleminx butterfly hunter (w00t)

Come on Mark, sort it out! A K9 lamping night in Rochdale?

Tina please don't take this the wrong way as anybody who knows me will tell you I'm very, very, very pro hunt and work my dog and have killed many tree rats ( pre ban )but in light of recent laws that have been thrust upon us it might not be a good idea to put messages like this on a public forum. At the end of the day you can please yourself and the moderators obviously aren't bothered and as you didn't set out to hunt the squirrel it was quite blatantly an accident you would probably stand god ground, but could you bare having your dogs confiscated etc: because some do good XXXX has reported matters like this? I couldn't.

I'm personaly very pleased that you weren't in the slightest bit phased by the situation and your dog was obviously doing what it loves to. so go get your lamp and get out there on the legal quarry that we have left to hunt ;) you won't look back :D

I totally get what you are saying Levs, i used to go hunting on horseback until a few years ago, but surely even "anti's" of all hunting types will no that dogs will be dogs and they will from time to time catch things they shouldn't, Tina wasn't bragging about it ethier more questioning her dogs natural instinct???

It would be very sad if we all felt we could no longer share ANY of the adventures that our dogs have had because somebody on a dog site thought it was wrong that a dog caught a wild animal purely by chance not by planning!

I don't know todays world is bonker's in what we can do, say, not say etc etc (w00t) (w00t)

Hi Levs

This is the site I was banned from a couple of years ago.

It was a good job Mr Roberts came to my rescue or I am afraid I would have spoiled my manners.

The site in question is VERY anti hunt and it was around the time the hunting with dogs act was being discussed I just pointed out to them what it would mean for the everyday dog owner. That was it I was banned from the board!!! Saying I was a trouble maker!!!!!

There are some very strange people around Dawn and you're probably better off not being on that board and you probably are a trouble maker anyway :D :D

Get lamping :D :D :D :D :D thats' what these dogs are for 8)

Thanks for that link, Levs. What an entertaining read  it should be called fluffypages.org.uk

A K9 lamping event sounds great to me. Bugger the law. Driving the sport underground adds to the excitement to me!

Levs I totally understand what your saying, it's just I'm not that 'up' so to say on the hunting ban, are squirrels not aloud to be hunted then? I've always thought they were vermin? and yes it would brake my heart if my dogs got taken from me!

it was purely by accident, and the squirrel was in the wrong place at the wrong time, I'm not trying to brag about what my dogs did as I did find it quite upsetting, I was just on about a sighthounds instinct to hunt, surely you can't get arrested for an accident?

and I do think the mentioned site is very anti also, plus I think a K9 lamping night would be great!! (w00t)

so what can you hunt now? is it just rabbits? I'm a noobie to this ;)
