Right it's a bit quiet on here at the mo so .........

What constitutes good breeding ?? .....Does it have to be speed to speed ?? ........Speed to stamina ??? ......Conformation, pedigree's that tie in or just pot luck ??? .......I personally used 2 dogs from roughly the same lines on my one bitch .....The ones from Obi (Obi Wan Kenobi :* ) who had a bit more coursing lines in him IMO were better constructed, faster (though only at their home clubs :b ) and Black lol ....but my next litter sired by a racing champion are certainly no better and the 2 I've kept though they have wonderful natures and are great to live with would never be placed in the ring (unlike the first litter) ........Is it not scary that looking at the dogs placed at the champs alot of them are from the same lines ?? ........Does this prove that us breeders (not me of course  ) are breeding the fastest dogs around as they know how too .....or does it prove that everyone's jumping on the same band wagon as speed is the most important thing to have with a racer ??? ........I will say fair play to Julia to going back to a line BEFORE STRIKER .....as Sue and Terry have also done .....A lot of people are scared to bring in new blood, but as we all know it is desperately needed ........All I can say is some lines click and others don't .........and I'm glad I had Jacob from Julia and Inca from Sue and Terry .........Connie will be double backing on Angie P's line when she goes to Jedi Knight and will also if it can be arranged hopefully be going to Jacobs brother ......lets hope they aren't fast though cos we know what will happen just look at Lass, Rio and Grace ........Hmmmm ........

All Im going to say, considering that you have made quite a few points there, is that I am glad that I have dogs and do not have to think about who I am going to have to take my bitch too 8) (and that is said very tongue in cheek as of course we look carefully at the breeding of any pups that are coming to be a part of our lives)

>I will say fair play to Julia to going back to a line BEFORE STRIKER .....as Sue and Terry have also done .....A lot of people are scared to bring in new blood, but as we all know it is desperately needed ........

There are problems with going outside the racing gene pool. If a coursing or show bred dog is used then what is going to be known about it's siblings and parents siblings. How is a breeder to know if there are any health / temperament issues in those lines.

So going back to older racing bred stud dogs does seem to be a less risky choice. For example the stud dog that Sue, Terry and Julia have chosen to use is line bred to Rch Jack's Boy and Rch Lucky Venture.

Janice has also chosen to bring in older lines with her recent litter. Although in this case Badgers dam Rch Kool Silk is of course a Rch Striker daughter.

It's going to be very interesting to see the pups on the race track.

:D Very interesting - I agree Barbara, and I'm glad all 5 pups will have a chance to race. I have great respect for WCRCh. Kool Silk (16 pounder and 1994 Superstars winner) but the "new blood" is from Badger's sire, Stripey Bill, my showbred who came 2nd to WCRCh Red Assassin in the Champs at Old Hall. Perhaps one reason why the competitors at the Champs are from the same lines is the lack of choice for those wishing to buy a whippet to race?

Logic says that speed bred to speed will produce speed, but as everyone knows there are no guarantees. That being the case there shouldn't be a problem in going to a less speedy sire in order to get a different attribute - be it looks, stamina or whatever. However the name of the game - well our game anyway - is racing, and there is nothing for good looking runners up. Most people only breed a bitch once or twice, so they want to be as sure as they can be that what they want is what they will get, i.e. speed.

I have had both types, but as my only interest now is racing, I'd have to say that I would breed for speed too - if I had a breedable bitch that is :)

The other part of the equation is selling on the pups to a racing family if they are NOT bred purely on race lines. You can't change people's perceptions and attitudes very easily and reverse discrimination and predjudice will always be around. I well remember a puppy from my Belle litter which I sold as a pup being derided on its appearance at a racing club, and the new owners (I gave them a Getting Started booklet along with the pup) being told "you should have gone to someone who breeds racing dogs" His racing name was Telegram Sam - and he managed to stuff those words down a few mouths before his owners moved out of the area and gave up racing. He along with Winsome and my own Hattie give lie to the supposition that if you breed with mixed lines you don't get anything you can race :- "
