So the ongoing problems with Oreo continue. She still tries to bite her back paws.

However, I have noticed recently that her nails are very brittle and are cracking and chipping. This could be a cause of pain.

Also, the base of the nail (where it meets the skin) is very red and balding. This is the case on all four paws but is a lot worse on the back paws.

I suspect this maybe the cause of Oreo's biting, but I wondered if anyone had any experience in dealing with brittle nails before?

Are the birds still in the house?

I would go back to the vet and have the claws looked at - perhaps there is a supplement he can take that can help.

I think its tough as I am sure you just want to find the reason and then a solution, but I do think you need to give things a chance to see if the changes make a difference.

It maybe his claws are brittle because he keeps chewing them?

Possible, but we don't give her chance to bite them now. When were out of the room she wears a head collar and we keep a close eye on her when were around.

I'm just trying to rule out any other issues.

Two of her nails on one paw have split right down the middle.

The birds are upstairs (where she doesn't go) but they're still in the house.
