My beagle Parker went to bed last night a normal dog with a normal tail, but this morning he woke up and his tail doesn't work anymore :(

The first four inches of tail at the base are trying to behave normally ie stand up and wag but the remaining two thirds of his tail is limp and just hanging.

The base of his tail wags ok but the rest flops about like a landed fish (w00t) anyone ever had this and any idea what it could be.

Rang the vet and was advised to give him Rymadil for a couple of days and if it doesn't return to normal then he needs to be seen :(

Personally, I think I would want him seeing before that - not that I would want to panic you. I just cannot stand the thought of pain and whilst rimadyl is for pain relief I would feel as guilty as anything at the prospect of letting him suffer.

Hope you get to the bottom of it soon. Do let us know how he get on. :huggles: :luck:

Thanks for your advice but i'm an experienced dog owner and he is quite comfortable on the Rymadil and i trust my vet implicitly.

Have taken Parker for a walk and he seems happy enough,i guess only time will tell.

Am going to do some research online and see what i can find out about tail injuries. I know they can break their tails and feel no pain at all,one of the whippets broke his tail as a pup and he never batted an eyelid and it healed completely although slightly kinked without any veterinary treatment as the vet advised leaving it alone unless it hurt or interfered with the dogs quality of life.

Ok it seems Parker has something called "cold water tail" basically working dogs can get it after a hard days work sometimes followed by a bath......

first part(base) of tail works as normal but rest of tail just hangs limp,is a bit painful but should right itself in two to four days. (w00t)

more or less over wagging of said tail and it's a little sprained..bless the chunky monkey.

I hope I can help -

Our labrador had exactly the same symptoms and the vet said it was 'Limber Tail Syndrome'. Her tail muscles had been overworked (with swimming in cold water and running around a lot) and they'd become strained and unable to hold the top two thirds of her tail up. It hung straight down as if it was broken but there was no break.

She tried to wag it near the base and it just flopped a little. The vet gave her anti-inflammatories and within 36 hours she was fine. It was a little sore for her to site down.

Hopefully it's just tired tail!!! and your beagle will be fine soon. Our lab's had it twice and she's completely back to normal! :huggles:

My Border collie (Grace)..had the exact same thing happen to her, i had started taking her swimming and after the third session the following morning she woke up with what i called a "lambs tail", the first 3 to 4 inches were perfectly normal but the rest just hung down, she also wasn`t in any visible discomfort and so i massaged the tail regularly and after a few days her tail was back to normal. :)) . I`ve heard that this is not an uncommon occurence and has no lasting effects, but the best advice i can give you is trust your instincts as you know your dog best :))

Thank you yes that's another name for it,i found some stuff on the web about cold water/Limber tail,it has other names too......but thanks very much for sharing.

Parker was running on the mud flats with our boxer on Sunday for around two hours and he came home and had a bath after so seems quite likely that's the trouble. x x x
