Fergal, my 10 year old whippet, has been diagnosed with bursitis in his right fore shoulder. He's had a cortico steroid injection into the burse sac, that was last Friday, and so far there's little improvement. We're resting him and he's taking 3 Tramadol each day, so he's not in any pain but he's still hopping lame.

Does anybody have any experience of this condition?

Should we be doing anything else?

Does hydrotherapy help?

I am a big fan of hydrotherapy. You should, however, be guided by your vet as to whether it is appropriate for bursitis.

Another thing to ask your vet is whether physiotherapy would help. I know Physio's have laser equipment which is used to relieve inflammation and this would be something to investigate too.

If he is pain free then why is he hopping lame. I would ask that question of the vet too. Surely a pain free dog should walk normally? Tramadol is quite a strong painkiller too.

Hello. I have whippets myself- truly the finest of breeds I think that if your dog is not showing improvement by Friday that you should go back to the vet and ask about adding Metacam to the regimen.

If still no better after maybe another week then I'd probably be asking  for an  X-Ray .
