Okay, so after a lot of thought and consideration, me and my family have decided to go and purchase a 5 birth motorhome for us and the dogs to go camping in. We've gone camping before with the dogs in the caravan but only once or twice really and never with a moterhome. What are the pros and cons of having the dogs camping with you? We want to go off for the weekend but are expecting the unexpected. We'll be taking Ruby and Jessie camping with us quite a lot so I'd love to hear your expriences, both good and bad. Thanks!

I take my 2 camping in a tent and we all love it! I always take the big crate with me so that I have somewhere for them to be that I know they can't escape from (wouldn't fancy explaining to other campers at 2am where their breakfast bacon had disappeared to if the boys decided to go on an adventure!)

I really can't think of any cons (apart from all the stuff I have to pack into the car!) its a good cheap fresh-air holiday which my dogs can share

and with a motorhome it would be that bit easier

Thanks for the tips! There's only three of us so the two dogs would have the pleasure of having either a double bed or two single beds to themselves!

We have a small motorhome and 1 whippet who loves the campervan, she gets all excited whenever we go any where in it! o:) o:)

Top tips would be to have something to secure them, harness/ crate when on the move. Also take a stake or 2 to let them sit outside on nice days, most sites want you to tether them

For colder nights early/ late in the season get some fleece PJ's for them. You can get plastic bowls from Ikea for about 19p which are great for on the move.... plastic plates & glasses all round!

Hope you love it as much as we do :D There are quite a few folks with vans on here...

Thanks, Ann. I hope that the dogs enjoy it as much as we do and we all enjoy it as much as you do. :)

Ooooohhhh I love my campervan :b I use it loads in summer, mainly at agility shows so everyone around us are doggy people & usually quite tolerant if one of the dogs...Rafferty :- "escapes.

We always set up a "garden" so the dogs don't need to be tethered but when I go away from the van to run one of the dogs in a class, then the others either go in a crate in the awning or back into the van depending on the weather.

We have been away on "Normal" holidays to regular camp sites but some of them don't like you setting up the garden as they think it lowers the tone of the site

At night we all tuck up together & if it's really cold the dogs have their lovely fleecy coats (made by Jok on K9).

We also have a drive away awning which doubles the space you have.

When travelling the dogs either all go into the crate or if it's a longer journey then the smallest dog travels on the seat with his harness on.

Since getting the van 4 years ago we have been away in it so many times & I just love it. It's a VW Caravelle & we had it professionally converted by Leisuredrive, a company in Manchester.

I hope you find a van & that you have as much enjoyment out of it that we have with ours. :luck:

We love camping with the dogs if were camping for racing we ususaly just have 4 whippets and maybe 1 or 2 greyhounds but if we go for a holiday we have all 9 dogs with us. you have to check with some sites to see who many dogs they allowe some only let 1 or 2 per pitch. the main one we go to lets as many as you like aslong as there on lead on the site and they dont touch his chickens. we have found the cheeper sites with less amenatys are usualy more relaxed about rulies and will let you set up a wind break garden. we camp in an 18 foot by 14 foot frame tent so theres loand of room for my tony and alexs. the sensibel dogs spend the days on a line with a hook in the ground so they can mooch about and go sleep on the air beds or ly in the sun if they want the silly ones i take cages for but very big ones so they have lots of room and aslong as they can see us there all happy.

If its a short trip I take water with me for the ogs from home if its more than a few days I allways boil the dogs drinking water to help with iffy tummys and try an keep the food exactly the same and the same feeding and bed times and they will love it. my lot get so excited when they see us sorting the traler out.

we have jammys at night for ours aswell if it gets cold but you should be fine in a motorhome. as i found they did play up and get unsettled if they were cold or the blankets came off them i was getting up all night covering tem up of fighting for the bed and jammys stoped that.

The dogslove getting out and about and seeing new things and meeting new people.

Just as a last thought get some new id tags maid with your mobile number on as away from home you address and land line numbers no good if your not there and add them to there normal tags.

 We started camping in a tent before we had whippets but when we got Evie our first whippet she automatically came with us.

Evie's first camping trip was when she was just 16 weeks old, she took to it like a duck to water, we kept the same routine as we did at home and she loved it.

We also took Gracie our 2nd whippet from an early age she too loved it

We now have a caravan and go away when we can and weather permitting, both girls love their time away in the van. My advice to you is keep the routine you have at home the same as when away oh and take throws for you seating areas.

A few pics for you

Evie on her first camping trip, we have a 3 bed roomed tent but guess who's bed she liked best

This is how Evie liked to spend her evenings in my OH's fleece, she didn't like to miss anything and often fell asleep in there, she was like a little kangaroo, peering out of a pouch :p

Enjoying a nap before the barbie

Then there were 2 whippies camping and both found the comfy beds

Both love the out doors, no trouble at all ;)

We went away at Easter this year even thought the forecast for the weather was Iffy, we had every weather condition going, snow, hale, wind rain and some lovely sunshine but we were warm and cosy in the caravan, this is the scene we woke up to on our first morning

Don't think Gracie was impressed at having to wear her jumper :- "

Enjoy taking your whippet away with you they will love it

Come on everyone post pic of their whippets away camping ;)

We haven't got any recent pics of us camping, but we go to the racing opens in our caravan, and all the dogs love it. They get excited when they see us packing the caravan, and they love the sleeping arrangements when we're away. Steve has his sleeping bag down one side, then I have 2 sleeping bags zipped together, and spread across the rest of the bed, and 5 whippets get in with me :huggles: very snuggly. Nothing nicer on a cold night that to get into your sleeping bag, and have warm whippets wrapped around you :D We haven't been away since we've had Smidge, but I'm sure he will love it as much as the others. At the moment we have the carpet covered with a plastic damp proof membrane sheet, as our old girl Jenna doesn't seem to be able to hold her wee like she used to - and I don't always hear her get up in the night .........she is looking very frail and doddery today, and I do wonder how much longer we will have her. She has wee'd herself in her sleep the last 4 nights, and has started to drink a lot of water. I suppose it is to be expected at her age (she's in her 16th year) but I will take her to the vets next week.

The only drawback I can think of when camping is muddy whippet feet when it's wet outside - wiping 24 paws after taking them out is quite a chore you know :sweating:

Hope Ruby and Jessie enjoy their camping - I think they're sure to

Go for it

Biggest pro I reckon is that you don't have to find someone to look after them at home (in the manner that they are accustomed too).

Hope you have a great time

We bought a caravan last year but have yet to use it. We went to Great Yarmouth last year intending to stay at a site that allowed dogs but ended up taying a Posh Totty's house (w00t) .

We did go camping the year before well my son and I went with William for the weekend again we camped in Tanya's garden. It was great fun my son age 13 myself and William my show greyhound in a 2 man tent lent to us by Bootros on here I slept with William's lead fastened to my wrist as he would have gone through the side of the tent if he got it in his mind too fortunately he just slept

We have only had our motorhome about nine months, its a five berth, enough for the two of us and our 1 whippy. We tether her with a training lead sometimes to the rear ladder or using a stake. She never wants to go far unless by accident we get to a site that is overrun by small grey furries. Its happened twice and now we double check before we go. Everywhere has been brillant. Last year we did Devon, Somerset, Cumbria, Yorkshire and others. This year we hope to do Wales. I take lots of throws for the seats and some of Tesco's rag rugs for the door way and other carpets. They say don't wash but I do and they come up a treat. Not bad for a 2 quid each. Saves muddy paws and bigger muddy feet. We don't have an awning yet and have only been away generally when it rained( bad luck). Our Jess sleeps on our bed wrapped in her fleece. We also use a non spill water bowl which is down all the time on a piece of non slip rubber. Jess always seems to need a wee at night so she jumps out attached to me by the training lead does it quickly and shoots back in. We are lucky because we can have electric heating on all night if weather too cold. Our door also has a fly net which so the door can be open but Jess cannot get out. You can buy these, I think, if one not fitted.

We decided on the motorhome because of an inheritance but it is the best thing ever. We had never done camping or anything like that but Jess came along so we has to change our holidays. I miss the sun but nothing else.

Enjoy yours.

Wendy

We only recently got a caravan and taken pepa and phoebe to southport. my mum dad and me and the dogs all the went and it was there first time. They really did love it! No problem at all!

Just make sure you take some stakes so you can let them just wonder for a bit in nice weather but only as far as you want them to go. And all the other doggie essentials.

We have some pics..

Will do! We're caravan club members all ready, we have a caravan out in Spain.

We bought a 6 berth camper last autumn

The best thing we have ever bought!!!

Go any where any time and enjoy coursing all over the country.

Dont have carpet on the floor get vinyl floors down and remember a mop and bucket and you can keep everything clean.....ish!!!

Cover all beds and sofas with washable throws and take extras in case you dont have the weather to rinse and dry.

A cage is essential for travelling and they share james bed at night.

We have seen these pegs to tether the dogs we will need to get one before going away again.

The awning is a must as you can clean them up a bit before letting them in.

Our 2 love it and have to be put in the car as we pack the camper or wed get nothing done as they try to help.

Ruby always appears with her favourite toys and stashes them!!!

Enjoy yourselves its great fun!!!

there not very good pics as they were took on my phone but a you see there main hobby is sleeping with a bit more sleeping then theres sleeping with dad as you could get board just sleeping on your own

i just found a few more and gusse what there sleeping again
