Does anyone know if it's possible for a vet to stick a needle into a nerve ending whilst giving a booster vaccination?

Yesterday morning took Freddie for his booster. All well and good 'xept he wriggled when injected, and yelped. I've never heard a dog - or cat - yelp during an injection before. But then I've never had a whippet before so I thought well maybe they are super sensitive...

I took him for a walk. He did his familiar squirrel chase through woods. It's always a bit hairy watching this but he seemed ok - no limping, nothing untoward as I put him in car.

Two hours later he started whining. Holds his paw up, looks muddled, gets on sofa anan hour later won't even move his head when I come into the room. When daughter gets home from school no welcome at all. She gets on sofa next to him, and he yelps. he keeps whimpering.

Finally I manage to get him off sofa but he's crying, and yelping.

So I take him straight back to vets.

Different vet examines him, says thinks it's a neck/ spinal injury. It might be skeletal, but she hopes it's muscular. He must have run into a tree without me noticing... Vet injects him with pain killer - no yelping at the injection this time round. Vet says come back Thursday or tomorrow if he's in more acute pain.

At this stage he can barely walk...and prefers not to! I have to carry him to car, and daughter has to hold him as I drive.

Back home he sleeps till 11.00 then I let him out. He manages to walk, wees, and when he comes in again goes MAD. MAD Runs around, wiggling his head in ecstasy. A different dog!

By now I'm really really worried coz none of this makes sense!

This morning he seems back to normal.

Any ideas?

Maybe he did just pull a muscle or trapped a nerve? My Chloe was in such a state last week that a tumour was suspected in her leg. It turned out to be a bad muscle tear. She was a real baby, crying and whimpering all the time, but is very much on the mend now thank goodness.

At least Freddie seems back to normal now! :)

Some pups do not even flinch when they get a needle, others scream their heads off. That really does not mean anything. Also dogs can have a bit of a reaction, so it is good idea to keep them quite for a day or so after vaccination. If your dog did hurt himself in the woods I would not let him run around like mad for a while. The injection may have stopped him hurting, but once it wears off he may be in pain again and if you let him run around too much he can may do further damage. Walk/run him on the leash, so he cannot do any mad jumps and turns :)

My dogs got their booster about 6 weeks ago. The nice new young vet :- " :- " Ricky was fine, but Robbie was in agony :( . He yelped every time he moved, but was fine the next day  . It did not help that the vet put the needle in one side of his neck and the stuff came out the other, over me and Robbie. The 2nd time the vet got it right, he's not jabbing any of my dogs again  I will now only let the 2 vet's I know well see my dogs :teehee:

Interesting... I'll avoid the male vet at our practice and go for the female one, who used to keep whippets!

unless you race or put your dogs in kennels I wouldnt bother with boosters at all :- " IMO easy money for your vet

Sorry to her that Freddie has been suffering hope he's still ok?

Marble sends him a cuddle :huggles:
