I have a whippet who *may* have a heart problem - one syncopal episode and the possibility of a slight murmur at auscultation - and am looking for recommendations re. a veterinary cardiac specialist who also specialises in running dogs please. I don't want to see someone who is not au fait with what a sporting whippet's heart normally looks and sounds like (as happened to a friend who ended up spending a fortune unnecessarily). The closer to Chester the better but we'll travel a good distance for the right vet.

Cheers guys

I have two whippets the older of the the two has a heart murrmer I have raced and hunted her never a problem The way I saw it when I was told better to a sort time doing what she loves rather than being on the on the lead being misserable So far she is fine.

Thanks, and I totally agree. In fact I'd be surprised if this dog turns out to have a heart problem, a lot of whippets are disgnosed with heart murmurs by non specialists when in fact their hearts are just fine. But as he collapsed at the weekend (the syncopal episode) even though he recovered quickly it seems best to get his heart checked by someone who knows whats what. He is a lurecoursing dog with quite a few titles under his belt so there's no danger he'll be deprived of the opportunity to run unless a specialist vet tells me he should be for now.

Cheers, Annie

One of my whippets did this occasionally after a lot of exercise when she was around 5 or 6 . She had no other health problems and lived a long and happy life until she was 15 so hopefully your boy will be the same :luck:

Have you thought of contacting Leahurst Vetinary school, Annie. It is part of Liverpool Uni and is just down the road from the Two Mills. I haven't been there for years so can't guarantee they will help but it might be worth a phone call. Give Finn a cuddle for me. xx

Posted this on TWF, but adding it on here too....

Sarah Smith is a cardiologist - her mother owns the Lakeisle Whippets and Sarah is experienced in Whippet hearts. I know several Whippets who have had their heart testing done by Sarah. She is in Derbyshire. http://www.sarahsmit...o.uk/index.html

Mike Holgate is the cardiologist we have booked to do the heart screening session at Northern Counties Whippet Club in a couple of weeks time, he is Cheshire based. Again, i know people who have used him.

Thanks Jo. I don't think he does have a heart problem - most likely diagnosis is either Petit Mal, or 'just one of those things' - but I'd never forgive myself if I didn't get his heart checked.

That link didn't appear to work Jo, but I've found this one - was interested as Jonah has been diagnosed with a heart murmur.

Just realised that my link is probably out of date! Talks about opening a permanent place in 2010! Sorry
