CARLA
Meet Carla. Carla is a 3 year old ex-racing greyhound girl who has now been retired from track life. She is looking for a loving retirement home where she can stretch out and relax after all her hard work. Carla is a very slender black girl with alert, intelligent eyes. Her coat has improved a lot since coming to us, but still has a bit to go.
Carla is a confident, affectionate lady with good manners around people. She enjoys a getting a good scratch behind her ears, and we know she has a fabulous personality in there just waiting to come out with the one-on-one contact that only come from a home environment. This lovely girl recently came along to one of our meet and greets and she was brilliantly behaved with the other dogs and many people – soaking up all the cuddles she could get!
Carla lives for her walks, and really adores getting a chance to stretch her legs in our secure paddock. Her recall is improving and she is starting to come to her name. However she should still only be let offlead in a completely secure area. She has not yet been in a home environment, but is clean in her kennel so housetraining shouldn’t be a huge issue. Usually all greyhounds need are 1-2 weeks of patience and understanding for them to settle into the home life. She has a healthy appetite, walks nicely on the lead and travels well in the car.
Carla is ok with other dogs as long as they aren’t competing for space. Right now she gets defensive if asked to share her sleeping area or food bowl with other dogs, though this could change once she’s out of the stressful kennels. We often find that problems such as this quickly dissipate once the dog is in a secure home environment. Carla likes to run with another dog when offlead, but gets very grumbly when she feels crowded. Carla would do very well as an only dog, however, as she can take or leave the company of other dogs but loves people. As Carla can get a bit bouncy when she realises its walk or play time, a home without very young children would be ideal for her as she may bowl them over.
Dear Carla has a lot still to learn about the outside world. Right now she is very interested in small dogs and doesn’t fully realise they are actually dogs. Lots of positive socialisation using a muzzle for safety will greatly improve this, however.
In general greyhounds are calm, mannerly dogs that are well used to being handled. They can fit very well in to a wide range of different lifestyles and usually adjust to the home life very quickly. Their soft, easy going nature often makes them ideal to live in a family with children, while their love of lazing around and low exercise requirements can make them perfect for the elderly. Greyhounds also don’t shed as much as other more popular dog breeds and this can make them suitable to live with allergy sufferers.
All in all Carla is a little beauty with a lot of undiscovered potential. She is a clever Madame and we can’t wait to see her experience the joys and comforts of a loving home environment.
Carla is currently in kennels in Norfolk, UK. She can be homed anywhere in the UK, but please note that you will be required to travel to Norfolk to meet and collect her. She is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure.
If you are interested in adopting or short-term fostering Carla, please email me on tamakin_84@yahoo.co.uk for our adoption application form and information pack. Emails are usually replied to within 24hrs. Thanks!
