I have just had my 10 year old male lurcher diagnosed with adenomas on his anal glands and the recommendation is that he has these removed,( there are about two pea size ones on one of the glands) and to be sent off for lab analysis. Also for him to be castrated. However I have checked on the internet and also with another vet and I now seem to have different views as to the treatment. The small animal vet assoc, recommends, castration and then possibly they may shrink, as does the 2nd vet I talked too, whereas another vets site says its standard practice to remove both the ademomas and the testicles.

Has anyone else experienced this, as apparently its quitre common in entire males.

I've heard of a few dogs with this condition, it's fairly common in unneutered males. In all cases they have had the adenomas removed as well as being castrated and have done very well with no further problems - but with any procedure I guess you are going to get different vets with different opinions.

Personally I think I'd worry that if the adenomas don't shrink it might mean a second operation - but of course you have to weigh that against the extra surgery and discomfort of having them removed.

Sorry - not much help, but wishing your boy a good recovery whichever option you go for :luck: :luck:

Thanks anyway for replying. Its as you say, weighing up the best option but its not an easy one.
