Just been reading about the cavalier club meeting at the weekend........

Have a read.....

http://www.dogworld.co.uk/News/13-cav-health-plans

It wont be very long before dog breeding is regulated by a body other than the KC, and that is the reason why this will happen

self-regulation is not working and will not work, the KC needs to get its act together and do something before its too late

I read the entire thread, including the comments of breeders and observers. To stick your finger in the hole in the dyke and pretend if you do it nothing will happen and the waters won't breach the dyke is madness but that is what they did with their decision this weekend not to make those tests mandatory.

There are responsible breeders, and no doubt they will continue to be responsible, but in order to deal with those that aren't it seems to me the only thing the Kennel Club can, and must do, is make it a requirement that all Cavaliers shown at English dog shows or being used at stud or as brood bitch for any litter for which registration is to be provided, must produce documents proving via appropriate vet tests, that the dogs being exhibited or breed to or from are, to the best of the knowledge of the vet, clear of the health defects in the breed. While this will create a lot of difficulty in the short term for all concerned, it wouldn't take that long before 'breeders and exhibitors' see the wisdom of clearing their breeding stock in order to be able to continue to sell them successfully for the high price they already demand, and to exhibit them. If the public learns that they may buy dogs for whom such paperwork has not been produced, but they will be doing so in the knowledge that the animal is likely unhealthy and carrying these awful defects. Without sanctions on the breeding community nothing will change except that more dogs will be produced who perpetuate the problems and breed quality and the future of the breed will be imperilled. The ultimate sanction would be to announce that beginning in X year no CCs will be awarded for Cavaliers until such time as the breed community complies with all requirements of the KC re meeting health test requirements.

i so thank my lucky stars that whippets are not in this state, and i give thanks to the breeders out there in our breed doing all they can to protect their future health!!!

im disgusted at the attitude of the cav breeders

well worth the read of the comments and the link also , just shows some are driven by greed and a fancy rosette and not the dog its self!!!

Thats a n interesting thought Lanny, wonder if all the Cavalier breeders would rush off and regeister their dogs with some mystical agency which is what the KC seems so afraid of, or would the threat of " No Rosettes or pieces of Green Card " actually mean they listen to their Breed Council and to the Scientists desperately trying to help their breed

It amazed me the number of members waiting outside the meeting room for their AGM was 63 the number who bothered to listen to a talk beforehand on MVD by a cardiologist expert in the field was 25 and this included the committee

Perhaps as usual they thought they have all the answers already
