Hello there. Me and my wife are currently looking to buy a King Charles Cavalier puppy, and wondering if there is a set price? (Not that this matters, but would be good to know)

I havent bought a pedigree puppy for 5 years but my goldie was £400 then...

I would expect to pay around £500 I think?

I'm not familiar with the price of that particular breed, but prices between different breeds can vary greatly. One breed may be around the £500 mark while another might be £1000 or even more. I'm not saying Cav's will be this high, but definitely do your homework. Also, don't shop for best price, shop for the best breeder. The one who has done all the health testing (Cav's have all kinds of potential issues, so there are several test including heart tests which a reponsible breeder will have done with the parents). Educate yourself about which tests are required. If a breeder says 'oh I don't test because we've never had those in our lines' then run a mile! So because of the expense involved in breeding and rearing healthy animals their puppies may cost you more to begin with, but the likliehood is that they will cost you less in the long run. A £200 pup from the farmer down the road could easily cost you thousands in vet bills over its life due to health issues.

Oh, some breeders are put off by the 'price' question. I'm not (depending on how it's put), as I think a dog is a considered purchase and you need to know before you invest if you can afford it now or need to save for a while. The best way to approach is to say you are looking for one, and in the midst of the questions you're asking about the breed in general ask what kind of average price you should expect to be given from a good reputable breeder. For my breed I usually give a low and high end with the average in the middle, and then I will say don't pay more than XX unless there's a really good legitimate reason. If it comes across like you're doing your research (which you are) the breeder shouldn't be offended by the question. Usually offense is taken when it's the first question, or if it's asked in a way where it seems like you are just looking for the cheapest dog out there.

'Oy how much are those pups' is likely to make a breeder shut down on you.

'I was wondering what I should expect to pay for a well bred puppy of your breed' will invite them to share what they ask and what the breed average is.

Your question above is phrased in such a way that I think most breeders would be fine with it
