This is charlotte, iam not sure if i have already put pics up of her as my computer is giving me a hard time at the moment so it may have already uploaded some photos. Does anyone have any ideas how to get a bit more zing out of a whippet in the show ring? Charlotte is certinaly not a nervous dog and she behaves very well when we go to the shows but she just needs a bit more oomph in the ring, does anyone have any ides?

Do you bait her?

Find her favourite food - cheese, chicken, liver (cut into cubes and baked in the oven) and use it ONLY for show training and shows. NEVER let her have it any other time. Train her to stand and use her ears for the bait. In the beginning, feed her AS SOON AS she uses her ears, reward their use immediately and often.

As time goes on make her wait a bit longer and hold her ears up for longer before she gets the treat.

Make sure her meal the night before is only a light meal - so that she's a bit on the hungry side the day of the show.

Thanks for the reply, Yes i have tried the bait and she is not very interested in food at the shows she realy is not a greedy dog, but in saying that i give her a normal meal the night before a show i will try giving her a lighter meal in future i have a show this weekend so i will definatly give it a try with roast lamb. Good excuse to have a lamb dinner as well!! she is such a pretty little girl and i would love to have her looking a little more animated in the ring.

thanks for the good sound advice i have seen your dogs often in magazines and have always liked them so its great to get advice from such an experienced exhibitor thank you very much. Iam trying to learn as much as possible about showing dogs and the only way to learn is to ask questions and watch other handlers. the whippet community here in SA has been wonderfuly helpful and welcoming and iam finding that whippet people realy are very willing to lend a hand. thanks again!

Hi Bethany I to have a dog that wont use her ears Try everything even little Meals the night before and Bait but still luck she is not a pig BUT i did have some luck with a squeaky toy but i only use it at shows and at home when we play but i do show her son Myskyan Dream Out Loud (TAG ) And let me tell you Bethany He loves his food which makes life easy and he loves the ring  so you could try a toy came and say hello on the weekend i will be there with Tag i would love to meet you and your Charlotte Cheers Michelle

She's really lovely.

If you throw a squeak toy, will she put her ears up for a moment? Because the judge just really needs to see them once to make sure they are correct.

hi Michelle, Thanks for the reply, When i stand her for the judge the squeky toy is the only thing that she will look at if i throw it out in front of her, some times it works some times it does not. I think i just have to face the fact that she is a bit of a "snob" in the ring. Would be great to meet you on the weekend we may have already met but iam hopeless with names! i will look out for you on the weekend and come over and introduce myself maybe you could show me a couple of tricks with charlotte and see if you have any more luck! i think she just likes to see her mum struggle!!

thanks again look forward to meeting you and yuor dogs.

thans for the lovely comment about Charlotte.

Some times she will respond to the squeky toy and sometimes she wont. Iam sure she knows when we are in the ring for an important class and does it all on purpose!!

only me again michelle! i know who you are now just googled your dog and saw a picture of you. I dont think we have met officialy yet but i will be sure to introduce myself on the weekend.  I saw tag not long ago out and about and pointed him out to my friend and said how much i liked him. It still staggers me how friendly  whippet people are.

   Bethany please don't think the LOL are at you - they are WITH you after reading your quotes above - I think Charlotte must the be related in mind with my Zest.

Because I got sick of standing in front of her and trying to get ears, I now stand nearly at the back of her and let her look like a SNOB. A lot of times the judges laugh especially when we try the throwing bait/leaves/grass she oft times looks down her nose at it, then up at the judge with a "do you think I'm STUPID" look.

She has done her fair share of winning - BIS & RUBIS at Hound Club shows just recently and BOB wins or better under quite a few breeder judges (I think they understand her mentality best :teehee: ) and I think only twice out of the placings at Specialty shows. Maybe she would have won more with more animation but she does ok. So maybe cultivating the Snobby look is the way to go

Oh and as for knowing when she's in the ring for an important class - Zest gives the most BEAUTIFUL ears for bait outside the ring ALL THE TIME

I think you'll see "the look" in the photo

i do know that look!! such a beautiful girl but she does have that this is "so below me" look just like my girl charlotte! maybe i will try and stand just behind her this weekend at the show and see what happens.

Charlotte also does her "winning" poses outside of the ring and sometimes when the judges are going over her on the table she closes her eyes!!! it is quite funny even had some judges have a giggle at her. She shows no signs of nerves she realy is not a "wussy" dog at all maybe she is just to confident. we have had some good wins together especially under over seas judges and specialty judges but iam still learning and this forum is a terrific way to get hints and help from experienced breeders and handlers. Thanks for the story about your whippy maybe we should start a club "Sighthound Snobs"!! Oh well she is happy and i love her to bits and thats what really matters. Thanks again.

Thanks michelle and i definatly know Myah have seen her many times in the winners circle.

Maybe getting someone else to show charlotte will be the way to go although it would be very dissapointing.

maybe she has just become bored with me!!! :( :( :(

will definatly find you on the weekend and you can let me know what you think. thanks michelle! :)) :))

Charlotte looks lovely Bethany here and in the other pic on the other thread. Thanks for your comments on my dogs, that was very nice to hear.

I'm going to highjack your thread just for a second though .... MICHELLE! Haven't heard from you for ages! Where have you been .... whelping a litter and showing the progeny obviously for one thing. It's been ages since we've talked!

How 'bout some pics of TAG and his sister and brother that I see did well recently at the SA Whippet open show.....

Hope to catch up with you on the email soon!

Now, back to Charlotte and Bethany ... I had a bitch called Chelsea who had beautiful ears - she would use them for food and toys etc at home and ringside but when she got into the ring she would NOT use them for ANYBODY or anything. Judges could use clickers, or squeakies, throw handkerchiefs, keys, books, and she would put her nose up in the air and turn her head away as if to say, "DON'T try that trick with ME!" And if they moved around to face her and do it again, she would just turn her head to the other side as if to say "I refuse to play your silly game!". (w00t) So sometimes even though we give good advice it doesn't even work on our own dogs! :b
