Hi - I was recently horrified to see that China continues to spend fortunes on shark's fins for 'soup' - to the degree that 100 million (yes 100,000,000) sharks are killed every year:

Whilst checking this out and trying to find a way of 'protesting' I came across other horrific examples of animal cruelty.

The treatment of dogs was, for me, particularly distressing, I don't even want to describe some of the images I came across let alone provide a link, they will haunt me forever !

This organisation seems to be making some progress if you want to read more.

They suggest that something as simple as a letter might help so if you can find the time to write one here's the address of the Ambassador at the UK Chinese Embassy.

(I've added a couple of lines though you could maybe make it more relevant)

Dear Sir

I would like to ask you to encourage the Chinese Government to implement comprehensive animal protection legislation to protect animals from all abuse, I strongly believe in the right for all animals to a life free from suffering.

Culture and tradition should not be excuses for cruelty.

Different cultures dont seem to av a problem as they need to survive and the heads of the country just dont care, we all kill to eat from the rabbit to the cattle, but the treatment to dog goes through do make me truely sick..

Yes I'm a meat eater and and if animals are bred and slaughtered with respect I'm pretty much OK with that, but the cruelty (particularly in China) is beyond belief.

Dogs have been domesticated over the centuries, if you walked into a cage full of dogs they would all wander over, tales wagging, looking for affection and companionship, offer their loyalty and love without hesitation ... that's how we bred them.

No other animals display this affinity with humans, sheep may wander over in the hope of being fed but not to receive a friendly pat on the head.

So to then grab one and skin it alive to satisfy the vanity of someone who wants a fur coat is beyond the pale ....

Of course i do agree but all the letters in the world aint going to stop the vultures in china, spain, or in a poxy flat in a run down overpopulated council estate in london from not caring for the animals that we should hold close to us... The way i handle it is to look after my own and im afraid block the sadness of others that i cant save..
