INTERESTED ON AGE OF DOGS USED IN BREEDING?

AS BITCHES HAVE AGE LIMIT

THANK YOU

I personally wouldn't want to use a dog under 18 months/2 years old because of a) his maturity and b) I'd like to see his ability for racing either head wise "or" speed wise is also complete (pref both  ) ........I hate seeing immature dogs used ........but thats just my personal opinion ........

Bitches age limitations are to do with the rigours of whelping and risk to the life of the bitch. Dogs don't normally have to work too hard

Provided you are happy with the intended stud dog's credentials I would say go ahead. Two minor considerations are ... if a dog is a virgin  and your bitch is getting to the end of her puppy bearing years, there is a possibility the dog won't "perform" and your bitch may be too old at her NEXT season (good practice to have a reserve dog in mind in this scenario) The other consideration is with regard to an older stud dog - it's possible that you may get a smaller litter due to a lower sperm count, although this is entirely incalculable - my own bitch mated with a young dog and got just 3 puppies - go figure!! :))

Well, having a few matings under my belt my personal opinion on the subject is;I do agree with Hannah a young dog who has only reached maturity himself would not be on my list of suiters. An untried dog as Ian says is great but a seconder in the side lines is a good idea .We used Song & Dance, not young but untried to our bitch(her second time)and he had no trouble performing, although help was at hand he didnt need any.But as for using older experienced dogs, this gets my "thumbs up",after all how many 1000's of sperm could a bitch need?,if she has 8 eggs then if the dog is proven im sure the 8 will be fertilised. We used Real McCoy in his later years and he produced 8 lovely healthy pups. When your talking count your talking in 1000,s.This is as i said ,only my opinion. :D

Sory just had a ticking off our lovely stud dogs name is Song n Dance.not Song and

Dance.Thnkq Eddie :p :- "

   SOME GOOD INFO SO FAR!!!

Maybe this is where artificial insemination would come in handy. I've had various conversation this year about how many line there really are. Different inherited defects and should we cut them out. Maybe producing sperm from all dogs and storing it in frozen straws would be the ideal answer not only for now but also the future of dog breeding. I also ask once about classifying racing dogs.If all info was stored we may be able to produce the perfect racing whippet?
