Hi all

Not been here for a while! So My Mr Cash has finally got a diagnosis after months and months of trying all sorts for apparent "hayfever"....in actual fact he has chronic rhinitis. He initially had an antibiotic and something to clear the mucus from hi snose. That is finished and he has improved greatly. The vet reckons they way forward is for me to always have a supply of steroids and medicate him as and when required. So that is what we will be doing after his (hopefully final) monitoring check up this evening......does anyone else have a dog with this? And is there anything else that you recommend?

Hi Cash Dolly, I'm in a similar situation.

My cocker spaniel was diagnosed with chronic rhinitis earlier this year, and none of the antibiotics and steroids prescribed seemed to do anything long term. The symptoms (e.g. sneezing, runny nose and snorting) persist and are much more evident this time of year. I have tried all sorts of things to help ease the symptoms with no real success so far.

He seems fine in himself, but I worry that he may be suffering without any outward sign. The one thing we haven't done is check for allergies, dust mites etc. Can anyone recommend anything we can do help with the symptoms or alternatively how do we go about checking for allergies?
Thanks

Hi CountryMike
Cash has lots f allergies and the vet says the two are linked. I have noticed improvement with the steroids but he still sneezes a bit. I notice changes in temperatures bring t on ie when we first go outside (even with his coat on) Before diagnosis I had him on Dorwest garlic and fenugreek and I found it really helped with his congestion at night. I took him off it when we got all his medication from the vet but intent to start it again. It didn't stop any sneezing per se but definitely with congestion. I also used to put abowl of hot water with a tiny drop of olbas oil in my bedroom at night just to help him and that worked.

Has your dog had an x ray? The x ray Cash got showed a huge build up of mucus in his nose so he was given medication over a week to clear that and the difference since has been incredible!

Hi
Dexter is definitely worse after a long sleep and the colder morning air this time of year does make him sneeze quite a bit. I have thought that the blankets we put on the sofa may be harbouring some things that he's allergic to, dust mites etc; I really need to do something about that.

He's had rhinoscopy, a CT scan and tests for fungal infection (which came back negative). The vet did email me the following: When we see chronic rhinitis and infection it’s always hard to know which one is the primary issue (any inflammation will predispose to secondary infection, but at the same time an infection can cause inflammation). The infection should be cleared by now, so it looks like Dexter has rhinitis and had a secondary infection. We can use anti-inflammatories for the rhinitis, but as they have side effects I would advise a 21 day course of a drug called Maropitant (which is actually an anti sickness drug, but has the side effect of stabilising some inflammatory cells, particularly those associated with allergies).

Unfortunately, the Maropitant didn't really work and we decided that he'd had enough drugs for the time being. Now that winter is setting in his symptoms are getting worse, and I'm wondering what to try next. Can you tell me a bit more about the garlic and fenugreek recipe and what to do with it?

Thanks

Here is a link to the garlic and fenugreek. I couldn't get onto Dorwest's own website for some reason

Dorwest Herbs Garlic And Fenugreek Tablets - Pack Of 100 - Animed Direct

I give him one tablet 3 times per day. In his breakfast and dinner and in the middle of the day with a biscuit. As I say it doesn't help too much with the sneezing but definitely helps with the snuffliness at night. I notice a difference with it for sure.

I ordered some of those tablets and they arrived this morning, so I'll give them a try and will report back with how it goes :) thank you for your recommendation.
