Night two of Jacques deep sleep violent dreams and just a teaspoon of wee. We took him out twice before bedtime which probably helped empty his bladder. The vet said if we hadn't noticed increased thirst or peeing, then it was probably anxiety that was the root cause. Just as I thought to be honest.

He suggested we tried (after examining him) Clomicalm or Zylkene the latter being herbal and available without prescription. Apparently they are both used for Separation Anxiety, and have been proven to help nervous, scared dogs/cats.

Has anyone had experience of either product and if so, would you recommend it?

Lovely to think that Jacques quiet, calm self could be only a short course of medication away!!!!

Looking into mild herbal preparations in more detail I have found Homopet Anxiety Herbal Remedy plus Vetzyme Stay Calm. Seems there is any amount of preparations to help with anxious dogs/cats but it depends on the animal. We want something to help calm Jacques down whilst still enabling him to enjoy his walk. According to the assistant at Pets At Home most herbal preps take a few weeks to work.

Hope to get some feedback here.

Well we have invested in Homeopet's Anxiety drops. 7 drops in a little milk before the morning walk today. Not sure if it was because my husband was with me, but Jacques was def less stressed. Pulled less and didn't bark at strangers. Barked at the one dog though.He has come home panting but not whining and pacing. A good result.

Apparently Anxiety drops can be administered 4 times in any one hour. They are herbal based, so non sedative.

It will be nice to hear from other whippet/dog owners who have experienced anxiety separation/nervousness/anxiety. With the amount of "viewers" on K9 I am surprised at the lack of interaction Hope things improve. :ermm:

I tried them a few years back in desperation with a bitch that had a phobia re car journeys and basically there are a waste of money and PAH would say they take several weeks to work to proliferate the sales of such products

I would stop him sleeping in your bedroom and start to assert your dominance on him it sounds like he has been allowed to believe he is the "boss" i dont mean using aggression but by getting him to toe the line and do as you say

Jacques certainly knows we are in charge, and only certain behaviours are allowed! I love him sleeping curled up in my back - keeps me warm! The 2 "accidents" are understandable considering the amount of changes that have taken place recently.

Although some folk experience a long time lap with herbal preparations, I know from experience that they can work very fast. I tried a herbal sleep remedy many years ago and was out for the count within 20mins!!

Suffice to say we will give Jacques the 7 drops again tomorrow and see how the walk goes. He has had such a restful afternoon that he's almost chilled! Quite something for this little chap who was scared of everything 2 weeks ago!

I tried Rescue Remedy which im assuming is the same sort of thing, my girl was a little nervy at shows, so

i gave her some and a little while later she looked like she was frothing at the mouth, never tried again (w00t)

The instructions clearly say the "dose" specific to the animals weight, can be administered every 15 mins up to 4 does in one hour, if needed. 100% safe and non sedative". That said, Jacques has spent the most laid back, calm, sleepy day today for a long, long time. Perhaps tomorrow I will reduce to 5 drops but I am confident the herbal preparation is helping.

because a dog can not speak we are talking perceived benefit and as long as your happy that's the main thing but personally i would not waste my money plus i wouldn't put a great deal of credence on a review from retail website that's actually selling the product lets face it there hardly going to put reviews from people such as me

We are sending the Canny collar back as Jacques simply hates the nose restriction and refuses to walk with it. On the other hand, some dogs don't mind it at all. All depends on the hound I suppose.

Good news, the main thing is you are seeing a benefit

Yes, great strides really.

Two weeks ago he would do somersaults on his lead, and weave across the path. His whining when returning home would last ages. Now he is calmer when going out, and enjoys the scenery much more. His nose is to the ground where it should be!!.

When coming home Jacques doesn't pull and seems genuinely settled. He comes back, drinks then potters around the garden until he settles for sleep. Much, much better.

I would recommend Homeopet's Anxiety drops to anyone with a dog who shows signs of stress or anxiety. I will post as much on their website.

Well, today didn't go so well. We gave the usual drops 10 mins before leaving. As we left the front path, Jacques spotted two Jack Russell dogs on leads across the road. He went crazy, back on two feet, and barking like mad. His mane was up and he was really cross. The JR`s gave him as good as they got tho`.

He just started to calm down around the corner, when a near neighbour and her young long haired JR (!!!) appeared. Both Timmy and Jacques went crazy at each other..pulling, standing on two legs and generally sounding cross. Once they had moved on, peace returned. The rest of the walk was fine, with other people passing without incident. It seems dogs are his thing now and JR's in particular!!!

He def calms down on the way home, which makes me think the drops kick in 15 - 20 mins or so after administering them.

Wish I had Caesar`s knack of knowing what Jacques` bark meant!! o (w00t) :thumbsup:
