Commercial Dog Food Vs Raw Food

Over the past few months I've become interested in the commercial(cooked) Vs raw food debate. It seems to make perfect sense to feed my dogs species appropriate food (dogs obviously don't cook their own food in the wild). I'd like to do a bit of informal qualitative research-If its permitted I'd like to ask members of this site the ages of their dogs- their general health and what their diet consists of. Also I'd like to ask members if they've had other dogs that have died and what were the ages at death and what was their diet prior to their deaths. Thankyou ,Johnathan and Muriel

I have 4 dogs ages between 3 months and 14 years all fed on complete food .

Last year two of my whippets died age 14 and 15 , they were fed complete food all their lives .

Never had much need to visit the vet apart from the occasional stitch up on my whippets :thumbsup:

The only time i had dogs die young(this was gsd's) & of cancers was when i had to feed complete for a few years as all the local abbatoirs were closing down.

Needless to say i eventually went back to raw feeding & have never had these awful problems since!!

 

So raw feeding comes out on tops,though i'm not opposed to home cooked food.

 

Dogs aren't mean't to live off boring pellets!!!

There seem to be a few feeding related threads about, one on the General Whippets section too.

There was (and I think still is) some very useful information and links about BARF and feeding in general in the FAQ section that may be of use to you, although some of the links may be out of date.

Personally, I have tried BARF with my whippet but found that a compromise suited him best as he was not keen to eat veggies and turned his nose up at some of the supplements therefore I was unsure that his diet was balanced. He has raw for breakfast (chicken wings are his favourite) and a hypoallergenic (gluten free etc) complete in the evening. It is supplied by a local company, unbranded, but with an almost identical composition to Burns etc (I believe it is made in the same factory but is quite a bit cheaper). I do stick with the never mixing raw/cooked in one meal though.

My dogs are fed raw veg/meat in the morning and kibble in the evening, raw bones on the weekend. There are 4 of them - 6, 10, 11 and 12. Nothing much wrong with any of them other than a dodgy toe or two and the 10 year old in for a teeth cleaning/extraction.

I don't think what they are fed, provided it's got all the nutrients, makes as big a difference to how long they live as genetics.
