We are after a smaller dog to put with our 2 boisterous boy whippets - a friend suggested a patterdale terrier - does anyone know anything about them?

whats wrong with another whippet you can never have too many whippets

yes I would love 20 more whippets but room doesn't allow - my husband and I rarely get to sit on the sofa as it is! So a little dog is the only option unless we win the lottery!

I have a friend with five dogs including a Patterdale who I'm sure would say "DON'T GET A PATTERDALE !!" They are very hard work, constantly busy and need lots of attention. How about a standard dachshund. Our mini dachsies cope with the whips and I know of other people who've had success with the same mix. But if I was getting another dachsie now I'd get a standard as mini pups are so small.

Someone I know from my walks only (not socially) has a patterdale and says he is extremely hard work and a suspect temperament as he seems to take a dislike to random dogs and can be a bit snarly and in their face. However, I've no first hand experience of them and there must be many patterdale owners out there who will take issue with me! :b

a spaniel maybe or mini schnauzer? though I must say Popsy doesn't take up any less space than the whippet :-

A mini schnauzer would be ideal. Mandy and Lily are great pals and Mandy is definitely the boss.

I can't really disagree :- Minis aren't that fussed about lying on the sofa either......hard work on the grooming front though unless you use an electric trimmer/dog parlour. My two are quite close and used to enjoy a good run around together. They don't do close up lying together though, more Fred's choice really. Not as lively as terriers (but more active than whippets), more on the sensitive side but can be quite vocal. Some a lot more than others.... :sweating:

My experience of patterdales is that they have very suspect temperaments and are very hard work to bring up properly so they are not aggressive. They are very on the go hyper dogs. Out of all the terriers one of the most reliable seems to be the border terrier though there are a few suspect ones of them too but they are much easier terriers if its a terrier you want.

If your whippets get to sit on the sofa, chances are your new addition will be on there too :) I find that a whippet does not take up a lot of room as they love to curl up. The advantage with whippets, is that they are happy to share the sofa with you quietly. Most other breeds are not as compact even if they are smaller. My friends tiny Papillion takes up a lot of room for such a small dog.

Have you room for a second sofa? One for you and one for the dogs? :) :) :)

How about one of these :D

This is boris, my sisters Affenpinscher........ he can fit into the smallest of places

We have Rebus our long haired JRT. He is now almost nine months (3/6) and has lived with our whippets since he was 7.5 weeks old. They get on brilliantly, no major squabbles at all. He loves masses of exercise and wears out Beau and Diesel. Despite being long haired he does not take any major grooming, just a quick brush once a week. Although he does moult, so far it has been nothing major. He is great at having his teeth cleaned and his nails done. He's bathed every couple of months but I am always asked how I keep him so clean as he never looks dirty. He's great in the bath and stands perfectly still until he is ready to be lifted out.

He has no temperament issues, is very laid back and extremely loyal. He is also superb at doing as he is told.

My neighbour's yorkie is about to have a litter of JRT crosses :D

Both mum and dad are small and excellent house/car dogs. I can imagine the pups will be very cute indeed so I'm dreading them being born because I'm bound to end up wanting one

Someone needs to design a double-decker sofa so that there's room for the whippets and us
