I board my dogs from time to time so have to keep them innoculated. The first time my whippet got his kennel cough nose drops he didn't like it. A year later he made such a fuss that the vet advised I get sedation tablets to give the dog a half an hour before the vaccination. I'm thinking that might be a good opportunity to get his toenails clipped too!

I'd like to hear from anyone with experience of sedating a dog with tablets. How sedate does the dog get? (will I be able to walk him home from the vets??) How safe are the tablets and how effective at getting the dog to let people treat him/her?

I have finally had to resort to mild sedation to get my old greyhound's nails clipped. She's always been neurotic about it, but seems to have got worse as she's got older and finally she thrashed and screamed so much that I was scared she was going to hurt herself.

The drug the vet prescribed was very mild, it is the same tablets they use for car sickness. She could still walk, though was a bit wobbly. She wasn't over keen on having her nails done, but put up much less of a fight and we managed it quite easily. She slept for quite a while when we got home, then seemed back to normal.

I can't say I'm exactly happy to be sedating her at her age (she's nearly 14), but weighing that up against the stress and risk of her injuring herself it seemed the best alternative. I've tried various herbal calmers in the past but they didn't seem to have much effect.

thanks Fee Fee; it sounds like it will be worthwhile sedating my dog for the occasion; he's adult but not an oldy so should be okay. I'm glad your own dog was okay with the sedation.
