hey all- as some of you know i have a small/med terrier and 2 cats, no whippeys

we are moving to a larger home at end of summer and have noticed Flo is missing some canine mates, she plays with my mums dogs and my oh's mums dogs but when we move she wont see them as much.

so my OH really likes staffies and i love their character too, think a staffie would be quite a good mate for Flo as they are both high energy and could take some rough housing from each other!

does any one have any experience of sbt?

i know that if they meet an aggressive dog- it will become aggressive too, but if they are well socialised and meet other friendly dogs- they are fine...

im also aware they can be noisy, but my terrier can be barky when she hears people outside my house too.!

any suggestions? :blink:

If you've done your research and know what your getting, go for it. Our family Staffie has recently been PTS at the age of 12.

Molly was excellent with children (see pic with my son Conor, taken a week before she died). She was also really good with other dogs. She never showed any aggression with other dogs in her life. (this to be honest is probably unusual). However, she was socialised very thorougly - went to ringcraft from 12 weeks. Also, as soon as she started going out for walks as a pup we made sure she socialised with other dogs off the lead. I think if you grab them back onto the lead all the time it will make them more likely to be protective and possibly aggressive.

Negative points - she was an absolute little mare as a puppy. Swinging off the washing, biting your feet (you couldn't not have slippers on). To be honest, words can't describe how naughty she was. My dad says he actually thought he'd made a mistake getting her! Of course this didn't last forever, and she grew up into a really loving girl with such a sweet nature.

My mum and dad won't have another one. This is because she was so lovely they feel that another one couldn't possibly be as nice and they would always be comparing it to Molly.

We've had a few in our family all have been really really sweet and loved kids, they have had the odd fight however.

We have one that comes into my work 'dog marley' (yup that's his name :wacko: )with one of the drivers but he's a pit x staff and he is just adorable, as soon as he gets out of the wagon he comes into the office as if he owns the place and sits by my desk :wub:

I am around staffys alot , and know they make brilliant dogs dispite the bad name that 'some' people have given them. Most staffys do hate other dogs But like most dogs you can change that if you get one from a pup.

When you see these young lads walking up the street with a staffy on the end of his lead thinking he's really hard it makes me laugh... cas the dogs always wagging its tail and looking cute :wub: I love it when you see an old man/women walking one!!

Staffys are big babys in the right hands its just the fckwitts that use them for fighting that ruin a good breed.

And the noise they can make is screaching...... I hate it when i have a staffy in the back of my van it sounds like a pig being strangled :lol:

hello, staffie fanatic (and insomniac...this heat is too much!)

a few points to consider before getting a nanny dog....

will there be someone around most, if not all, the time? staffords are true people dogs, and when the owner goes out, even for a short period, will destroy everything in sight through boredom, separation anxiety, or just because it seemed like a good idea at the time :lol:

are you prepared to take a pup to ring craft/socialisation classes? though a staff will accept and adore the resident four-paws, they are very difficult around other dogs, so the more you take the pup out and about and mingle with other animals the better, any animals (amber nearly had me over a wall while in scotland. she was VERY intrigued by a herd of bullocks :sweating: )

if you want a dog that will protect your house, forget it! they will quite cheerfully let any tom dick or harry into the home and rob you blind :wacko: but, for protecting the family, they are outstanding. when stephen and i play fight, just giving little jabs, both amber and dante put themselves between us and wont let stephen continue :lol: its hard for us to tell off the kids for the same reason....ambers attitude is 'MY babies' you cant tell them off :teehee: both are also first to get to a child if one of them starts crying.

then you have to think about breed specific health issues. you should always have eye tests done for PHPV and HC at a place that does it for kc records, costing anywhere from £30 to £60, depending on vet, and it has to be a kc place in order to get certificate etc. they now also have a dna test for HC (best send off blood rather than mouth swab-too many people get inconclusive and need to send off more samples) this gets sent to the animal health trust, and costs £60 exactly, not including vet charges for extracting the blood.

additionally, there is a condition in staffords called L2-Hga. this is genetic and requires 2 copies (1 from each parent) to be affected. this illness causes seizures, brain damage and death, usually before the pup reaches 1yr. again, £60 to the animal health trust.

ok, going on a bit now.....i could talk staffords constantly :b :lol:

we'll be going back to the same stud the last litter were spot on for size, conformation and character, added to the fact that amber and buddy are both phpv hc and genetically l2-hga clear, meaning that our previous litter and our planned litter are genetically clear and therefore need no testing (copies of parents certificates will be supplied)
