Constant whining/whinging

Hello all,

after a bit of in sight as to why my dog whines all the time and i cant seem to get him to stop.

if i'm around he is fine but if i go upstairs or out of sight where he cant follow me) he just sits at the bottom of the stairs or wherever and just whines until i come back into site.

if we make him do something he doesnt want to do he whines

if he tries to get his own way and cant, eg: getting on the sofa or even going in the other room he whines

if he wants to run off and play but he is on his lead and not allowed he whines!

i'm sure by now you get the picture

he is fine left on his own and in general day to day things but this whining is starting to drive me insane!

he will go in his crate when i'm getting ready for work as i dont trust him downstairs on his own (he likes to eat my pillows on my sofa) and the noise he makes is awful!

why does he do this???????? and what can i do to get him to stop! i am thankful in a way he isnt a barker otherwise i think i would be living with a constant migraine!

this is really puzzling me so any advice would be greatly appreciated

My 9yo whippet is like that - mostly when she wants something specific, but she communicates a LOT through whingeing and is the most vocal of my girls. She also has the most colourful language I've ever heard from a dog. She's known as the whingebucket, and the other day I threatened to remove her 'whinge-pipe'

For the most part we ignore it, or tell her (without making eye contact) to shut up or leave it. If she wants something specific like covered with a blanket she'll lie and whinge, so I will cover her up. So I've partly trained her too, but I've also learned the difference over the years of the whinge for a specific purpose and the whinge because she's narked about something.

It sounds like your Bear is a very vocal dog. If you can train his squeaking to a cue such as 'speak' you can then train the opposite, 'quiet' and then start rewarding 'quiet'. I'm sure you've said he knows 'settle', so perhaps work with him from scratch leaving the room for a minute or two and rewarding him for being quiet, then building up your time over time.

Have you tried a stuffed kong to keep him entertained? We used a kong with our Chelsea-Bear when we would leave her. It was the only time she would get one stuffed with treats, so it was special.

Good luck. Nick manages to tune it out (even if she's right beside him on the sofa). For me it's earsplitting.

Nice to hear from you again

He has Kong that he gets when we go out.

As he isn't allowed upstairs I can't give him his Kong or bone etc every time as he will get very fat very fast lol!

I know his whines and he is purely after attention. When he was castrated I knew he was unhappy the tone in his whine was different; I'm sure you know what I mean.

Its odd because I can differentiate between what his whines are which I suppose is good its just getting him to shut up!

It drives James insane! Bear even does it when he is around and then I leave the room! If he can't follow me he just whines! Thankfully he doesn't get destructive but even James can't shut him up with his presence its only me who he whines after

So odd! I've never had a dog that's done this as excessively as bear!

I'll try what you said in terms of training him with a quiet command and see how I get on!

I'm sure you feel my pain on this one!
