My 3 year old dalmation Brian is constantly licking and scratching,I've to the vets on various occasions and they say it's this its that, after 6 trips already this year paying £100+ everytime I'm at my wits end he's driving me and my wife crazy,he's up all night licking scratching everything apart from sleeping,it's getting to the stage where we can't go on it's physically killing us,if anybody has any ideas that would like to share and help a very tired man,he gets walked 3 times a day he's never left on his own,so I can't see that boredom or lack of exercise is the problem,I just hope someone can shed any light on why my boy is acting like this

Has the vet suggested allergies? If you think it could be food a sensitivities then I would recommend having a look at the nutriscan website.

What are the vets saying? They must have some idea. Dogs can be allergic to almost anything. Tests can be done to find out what the allergy is. If it is something like grass then not much can be done other than drugs to calm the system. If it is a particular food or house dust mites etc then dealing with the allergen is the best way to go.

My dog had a mild allergy and we used Piriton, on the recommendation of the vet, last year. It did help. This year, for behavioural reasons, we could not use it. We have been working on his anxieties and they, along with his allergies, have improved. I wonder, therefore, if anxiety could be a factor?

Dogs do pick up on our emotions and your dog could well be doing this with you. He scratches, you get agitated, he gets anxious because you are agitated, this makes him scratch more. You get the picture.

Are there any other stresses in his life that might be making him anxious?
