Hi all, An update on poor Blake and his corns

After three operations to remove them one has come back on each foot, he is now in so much pain he is walking on his stoppers to try and releive the agony, constantly panting in pain if he has to walk, so after much agonising he is in the vets to have one toe removed, it remains to be seen if the other toe will have to be done at the moment that one is not so bad

He is only five so the future is not too bright for him

I would say that this terribly painful condition can run in families so please be careful when thinking of your breeding plans, it can be so devastating as a young otherwise healthy dog may have to be PTS if he can no longer run and enjoy life

feeling pretty stressed out and sad Jan

so very sorry to hear this hope it all works out for him :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: :huggles: :huggles: :huggles: :huggles:

Poor Blake. Get well soon :huggles: :huggles: :huggles: for both you and Jan hope you are feeling better soon.

aww poor lamb...my 12 year old whippet gets corns on two toes, one on each front foot.

one gets very painful and i usually cut out the head of it with a sterile scalpel blade and then he has a human corn plaster, sometimes two elastoplast taped to the offending toe, this means he can walk and run with virtually no discomfort on concrete and absolutely no problem on grass.

Oh dear ... I hope Blake makes a speedy recovery from his operation and gets some relief from the pain very soon. :huggles:

Oh dear. Sorry to hear that. Fred has just had a second corn removed. It does cause him to limp, but he's not in as much pain as your Blake with them, by the sounds of it. I'm not going to go through another op with him if they come back again, it's just too much of a trauma all round. Good luck with the toe removal, although it does all sound very worrying for you :(

Jo on The Whippet Forum uses a homeopathic remedy for her dog who suffers badly from corns and has had a toe removed as a result (of the corns), and so far so good by all accounts. It's called feluja I think.

Thanks for the good wishes, Blake is home and has eaten a big tea.... bless i do love him

The vet was saying the problem with toe removal is it puts more pressure on the other toes and it is likely he will develop corns on those too

sadly there are only 2 that can be removed so after that I just dont know

Anyway it may not happen so fingers crossed, and thanks for the info jan x
