Crate Being Abused

i can c this lil puppy makin the news in years to cum for attackin sum1. thats if it lives that long!

This is the main reason why I am so anti crates.

So easily abused by some people. :( Must add they are a good tool if used correctly.

But........

People get crates thinking it is perfectly OK and the done thing to leave dogs in them for hours and hours on end. Not true. And I think that sometimes a dog accepts his lot and does not make any fuss about being in a tiny crate for long periods because he knows no different, he has been conditioned to live a good amount of his time in this inhumane confined space and so the owners think it's alright to go on crating.

yes he's a total plank and is being utterly ignorant about the dogs welfare and needs.

I think some people get stuck into this comfort zone with crates and are afraid to step forward and take a chance of leaving dogs alone to have free rein of the surroundings, which would be so beneficial to the dogs concerned.

You are such a ladies man, I can tell. :- "

I assume this isn't a UK site, as there are (in theory at least) no Pit Bull puppies in this country. They became a banned breed in (I think?) 1991 and all those that were in the UK at that time had to be neutered, and they can't be legally imported.

I'm sure crate abuse takes place everywhere, but use of crates for long periods and as a dog's main living space seems to be much more widespread and accepted in the US than it is here. :(

Why do the americans have to change animals natural habits. I used to visit a US ferret forum, and stopped using it when they informed me it was standard practice in the US to de-scent and remone canine teeth from ferrets! Crating dogs is cruel, they need the oppertunity to get up and move around at will. If people arnt prepared to change their lifestyle to allow this, they shouldnt have a dog.

I remember not so long ago watching a dog training programme, cant remember the name.

And there was a guy who left his dog at home alone for hours, and she made the owner sit in their small dinning room for 3 hours just so he knew what it was like, and when he finished he understood what the dog had gone through day in day out, and why it had so many problems...

We use a crate for our foster dogs & they spend upto 8 hours at a time in them. They are large and spacious and although they are not my cuppa tea for my own dogs they are very useful in the foster scenario. The second we are home though they are out and given full roam of the house. I would also say that the second they want peace and quiet the fosters take themselves back off to their crate.

I think he should have been made to sit in the loo or the airing cupboard to have got a more realistic idea of what a dog would feel like in a crate. The dining room albeit small would not have represented anywhere near the same area by comparison. Even when comparing to the largesr available crate on the market.

I think the largest crate available is actually 48 inches long and advertised as (suitable for St Bernard Irish Wolfhound sized dogs) these are seriously big dogs, how on earth can these crates be considered big enough for them because I'm sure Annie measures more than 48 inches when she stretches out and she's only a whippet !!!

Yes! We saw that programme and it was great how the trainer sat the owner in room alone so he could feel how the dog feels.Great idea!

We use a large crate for our dogs ,its a rest area and they treat it as their own space. It also protects them when we go out as they can get themselves into all kinds of situations. My worst fear would be them finding a wire or flex from an electrical item and killing themselves. Our dogs are happy and love their little cosy space.even when door is open they like to go in and chill out especially for a quick nap if all space on sofa has been taken :- "

i remember that it was the same programme that had david hamliton dog on

The only time i ever use one of our crates is post surgery to confine a dog which needs to be kept still or safe from other dogs helpfully nibbling off stitches but would not leave a dog confined to a crate for more than an hour.

When training a pup the absolute maximum it should be left crated is four hours but i even think that is too long.
