I think some people get stuck into this comfort zone with crates and are afraid to step forward and take a chance of leaving dogs alone to have free rein of the surroundings, which would be so beneficial to the dogs concerned.

I think he should have been made to sit in the loo or the airing cupboard to have got a more realistic idea of what a dog would feel like in a crate. The dining room albeit small would not have represented anywhere near the same area by comparison.
