I'm going to buy a crate for the car, as I think it would be better for Tascha all round. Now, bearing in mind, when I go to the races, that I have at least 2 kids in the back of the car, I won't be able to flatten any seats to make room for a crate. I drive a vauxhall astra.

What size crate would you recommend to get? I'm totally dim as far as dimensions are concerned. Also, the crate size you recommend, would it fit 2 whippets in it?????? (actively searching for a pup!!!)

Thanks

Andrea xx

I think you're probably going to be struggling to get the size cage i said in the boot of your car (i presume it's not an estate), i have a seat ibiza and i can only get my cage in if i take one of the back seats down & put it in length ways. Might be better with just one of those guard things on the boot (until you get a new car lol)

The sad thing is Vicky, it is a new car, we only got it in August last year, so I can't see DH letting me change it again just yet

I've just managed to get my own way about getting another whippet pup, so I think I'll leave the car for now, and no, it's not an estate, only a saloon.

Would a smaller crate be too small to house a whippet?

I don't think you'll get a crate in without flattening the seats either. Go and suss out guards for now. I have just bought an RAC one for about £25 for my little hatch back. It is universal so is a good solution, I'm in the same boat as you with needing the back seats. We have a bigger car, but it is Ohs, he is on about a cage for the future. Try the guard for now

Is it safe to have Tascha run round the boot loose? At the moment, I'm using a harness that attaches to the seatbelts, but that only works if there is a spare seatbelt in the car lol.

I was looking for something that would confine her space a little, in the event if I had to slam my breaks on, I'd be frightened that she'd get hurt.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far.

Bung a big duvet in. Even if she was in a crate, you couldn't guarantee she wouldn't get hurt. Pad the boot, make it cosy and safe

We can get the Argos crate in the back of our Mondeo hatchbacks with no seats down, we only ever tried it once but it fitted  Do you know anyone who has the Argos crate just to give it a try maybe?

I've seen Archie in the back of your car, Jo, and I was impressed by how wonderful and snug he looked. I don't know what Astras are like, but if they're similar to yours, then there's probably not much chance of him being thrown about is there? Reckon it's an ideal solution! And if you did stop suddenly, then he'd be pressed against the seat back, which is gentler than crate bars.

edited to say when I say "he" I'm talking about Archie, not Tascha - I know she's a girl!!

I bought the Argos crate for Diamond, yes it would fit 2 whippets in for a car journey, but no it doesnt fit into the back of an Astra.

As others suggest, just buy a dog guard and pad it with a duvet

A dog guard won't stop your car being eaten if Tascha gets really excited at whippet racing. A cage will. If you don't have room to put the cage up in the car then you'll have to buy one to put up when at whippet racing.

The Argos one will fit 1 whippet okay. But they have plastic bottoms which get dug up and eaten. :b Can't think how I know that. :- "

Buy the cage off Ebay I got a really nice one off there and so did Milly? and someone else.

I can never get the order of these correct so bear with me. My Argos crate is 30" deep x 21.5" wide x 24" high. I have big boys so it's not really fair to put two of them in one. But Tascha is smaller and a girlie so if you get another small girlie you'll be okay with one of that size. ;)

Mine's okay for one of my big boys and a pup.

Was gonna add that Beejay....that the bottoms of the Argos crate are a disposable lasagne dish...otherwise rubbish and chewable!!!!!
