Hi all

I'm in the process of buying a puppy which is a cross between a Bernese Mountain and Golden Retriever. I have two children aged 3 and 11 and wonder if this mix is suitable. I've looked at the individual dogs temperament and both seem ideal for the family enviroment.

Is there anything I should know?

Also, I want to buy pet insurance - can anyone recommend a good provider?

Thanks

Zoe

What a weird cross !!!

IMO i wouldnt have such alarge strong dog with a three year old, they are so capable of accidently knocking them over.

Something a little smaller and not quite so strong

Well all I can say is it'll be a big powerful dog. I would be worried it might not be the best choice if you want your kids to be able to handle and train it, that was important to me when we got our first whippet. My daughter (who was 11 when we got Ruby) handles her at training classes and it's been a great learning experience for them both.

Both breeds make good family dogs - once mature should be relatively calm, loving dogs but that first 2+ years of bouncing around...you'll have a lot of dog to bounce!!

and as Julie so rightly says your child will not be able to handle the dog which is a shame.

have no idea about the cross - but Argos pet insurance (platinum cover) is a very good package

I would say that you would get a rather large but good natured dog. I do agree with what the others say regarding your children not being able to handle the dog and possibly being knocked over.... but ........ I have always had German Shepherds and I have 2 children. The last GSD was bought when my daughter was 4 years old. The dogs have always been supervised when with the kids and visa versa. We have had a couple of accidental knock downs, but on the whole the dogs are really good with the kids and the kids are great with the dogs. My daughter now almost 7 walks our youngest GSD (with help) and my son spends hours playing fetch with him. As long as you supervise their interaction and the puppy is brought up properly and trained, I see no reason why he won't be a fantastic addition to your family :huggles:

HOWEVER, bear in mind that both these breeds are predisposed to hip dysplasia so it might be an idea to at least get to see both parents if possible
