My friend Mary who took "Jack" (whom I bred) to England with her, has just rung me in tears. Jack has done his cruciat ligament and needs an operation. He is 8 1/2 years old.

Does anyone have any experience with this operation and the recovery time afterwards?

Urgent.... I told her I would call her back asap. Thanks

Hi Lana

My friend's rottie did both of his cruciates and had them operated on seperately, by different Vetsat different times. The first time he was allowed no exercise for 6 weeks, even had to go into the grden on a lead, and then lead exercise for 6 weeks, then back to normal.

The second time he was allowed lead exercise after 2 days and back to normal after 4 weeks.

He is perfectly fit and well now.

It seemed very much as if the difference was down to the skill of the vet. The ops were only 6 months apart so I cant imagine there had been huge advances in teh operation during that time? I'd suggest that she gets the best Vet she can.

Needless to saythe sescond op cost her double what the first one had, but it was worth it, especially as he was insured!

If she is in the North of England I could tell you which Vet she used.

:luck: to Jack. He'll be fine.

Or perhaps the degree of damage done? Type of tear/placement of the tear?

Thanks for that info Rae. I will pass it on to Mary.

Good point! The second was much worse and so that's why it was referred to the second Vet though. I should have mentioned that :clown:

My old girl Joanna snapped ALL of the ligaments in her leg when she was over 6 years old .......The operation was a long one but worked ........and after 3 months (bear in mind she had a back injury aswell), she was jogging about again and even caught a rabbit :b .......... :luck: Jack :luck:

Hi Lana

Sorry I missed Mary today, if she wants to ring me back anytime tell her not to hessitate.

See if she can find a vet that does a "TPLO" (Tibial plateau Leveling Ostomy).

You remember one of my little whippets - Adel? She had the op at 6 mths of age. It's the more costly operation but they are never layed up for any length of time and make a full recovery. Adel is just short of her 8th birthday and has run hard since 10 mths of age including sprint racing, oval racing, lure coursing and live coursing. She's never so much as taken a lame step in all that time.
