Hi I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice for my Cavapoo.
Just over 4 weeks ago she hurt the cruciate ligament in her knee. After taking her to the vet we were advised to completely rest her for 2 weeks. It has now been coming up to 5 weeks and she is still limping and we haven’t taken her out other than out in the garden to go to the toilet. Has anyone had experience of this injury taking this long to heal? The vet said she may need an operation if it doesn’t heal but I have since realised that there is a limit on the amount our pet insurance will pay for this injury. I have no idea how on Earth we could pay for an operation if she needs one. She doesn’t seem to be in any pain (thank goodness) but I’m just wondering if this type of injury just takes a long time to heal. Any advice would be great thank you.

Hi and welcome ! We had a Springer that damaged her cruciate, the vet wanted to operate straight away but after researching we decided to go down the management route, Molly was slightly overweight so we got her weight down with a good diet but also brought her a Muttknee brace which is made in America ( after reading great reviews ) we sent measurements off , which have to be very accurate, and 10 days later the brace arrived, Molly was very happy to wear it and she had it on for gentle on lead walks , kept her quiet in the day, not letting her run about or jump on sofas etc, she was a lovely gentle girl so nice and easy . Wore it for three months gradually letting her have longer walks on extendable lead , then took the brace off , still on lead for a couple more weeks, her knee totally repaired and we never had a problem again. For the cost of £200 it was a godsend and saved her having surgery and us paying out £4000 :D Have a google at Muttknee braces .

Thank you so much for your reply. I will definitely have a look at that. Luckily Flo is very placid so keeping her from jumping around is quite easy. We are also making changes to her diet to get some of the excess weight off (if she was able to go for walks she would be shedding the weight!!). Thanks again x

Good luck :) management can work very well if you have a calm dog, Molly did sleep in her crate at night so we could be sure she was ok , but she loved her crate anyway so that wasn’t an issue. Be interested to hear how you get on, much better to avoid surgery if you can.

Oooh, my terrier has done her knee in and the vet wants us to manage it conservatively but she's a bit of a jumper when she's excited. That brace might work really well for us. Thanks.

Definitely worth looking at , must admit I was a bit sceptical but after reading all the positive reviews I had to give it a try, so pleased I did :)

Years ago one of my lurchers tore her cruciate and the vet suggested conservative management. It took weeks and weeks but she recovered. Although never completely sound, she did not seem in pain once through the recovery period, and caught many rabbits in the years afterwards.
