My whippet suffered a cut pad on his back paw day before yesterday. He tries not to put it down when we are in the house but when we are out runs about like a mad thing - only to limp again when he gets home. Have decided not to take him out today to give it a chance to heal - but he has got the right hump with me now! Any suggestions as to the best way to deal with cut pads - do they need complete rest or will they heal by themselves regardless.

Grateful for any advice.

Soak it for 5 minutes in salt water (5 teaspoons to 500ml water) three times a day and keep him on a lead until it has healed. If it looks as if it might have dirt in it, use epsom salt (magnesium sulphate) instead of ordinary salt. (Get it at a pet shop that also has horse things).

Good luck.

Hi,

My whippet greyhound cut his pad to the bone 2 weeks ago.He has to have a op to remove a skin flap, and is taking forever to heal!!We purchased 2 neoprene boots from www.jansgifts.co.uk,and threaded a lace through,to help keep it on why he runs. This has made all the difference, just keeping it clean, dry, and the padding from the boot,he is now well on the mend.

Agree with Gay ...and then dry the foot and rub in either Aloe Vera gel or Cut and heal gel ... :luck:
